3 things to confirm before street trees go in along a new lot — none of them are just “the hole is dug.”

Before street trees and mulch beds go in along a commercial lot like this oneFSC–UCIC Lot 3 in Winston-Salem, confirm:

1. Curb and road work is complete and the planting areas are accessible.
2. The planting strip is properly graded and ready for installation.
3. A watering plan is in place from day one.

On this project, there’s no irrigation system, so we’re using tree watering bags and filling them on a regular schedule to make sure the newly planted trees receive the water they need.

Same site, three different stages, same week: a gravel stockpile, a graded field, and a finished planting bed all on one active job.

Project Foresight's parking lot addition in Kernersville is active on multiple fronts right now: a gravel stockpile staged for base material, an open field graded and ready, and — closer to the building — mulch beds and new trees already established.

Working with Landmark Builders to keep those stages moving without one holding up another. That's the real shape of an active job: not one linear before-and-after, several sequences running in parallel.

Most schedules treat "plant the trees" and "install irrigation" as the same day. They're not.

At Burlington SDA, irrigation goes in first — installed, tested, and ready before the trees and plants are placed. That way, once planting begins, the irrigation system is already in position to provide water immediately.

Working alongside Clayton Cons. Company on this one, treating irrigation pre-install as its own phase — not an afterthought tacked onto planting day — is exactly why this job already has 173 photos and 4 checklists on file. There's a lot to track when it's done in the right order.

Most GCs I've talked to schedule "landscaping" as one day. It's rarely one day.

Before the landscaping can go in, the hardscape has to be in place.

Before we can plant, mulch, and complete the landscaping at Aldridge Park Improvements, concrete sidewalks, curb, and gutter installation come first.

Working with O'Connor Co. of N.C. on this project, that sequencing matters. Once the concrete work is finished and the surrounding areas are ready, our crew can move in and complete the landscaping without interfering with other trades or finished surfaces.

It’s a good example of how landscaping fits into the larger construction schedule — our work may come later in the sequence, but proper coordination beforehand keeps the project moving smoothly.

Good landscaping starts with good sequencing. Making sure the site is ready before our crews move in helps keep the final phase on schedule.

Most people never think about what's under the pavement.

Irrigation sleeves have to go in while the ground is still open — before sidewalks, curb and gutter, and parking lots are poured.

That's exactly where we are at Stotan Industrial right now. Bare dirt, concrete tilt-ups going up, sleeves already in the ground.

By the time this site looks finished, the infrastructure underneath it will have been done for months.
