This one is about a lot more than adding a MiniPool—it’s about completely changing how this backyard is used.

For our latest project, we built a 10x17 MiniPool, removed a section of the existing railing, added new steps down to a patio extension, and created a backyard that feels connected from top to bottom.

The finishes take it to another level:

Dark, dramatic stone on the waterfall wall paired with that Aruba Sky water color gives this one a seriously luxurious contrast.

“STAND CLEAR” — especially when the boss decides he’s running the equipment. 😂

Trenching is underway, dirt is moving, and apparently supervision wasn’t enough today. Sometimes the boss has to jump in the seat and remind everyone he’s still got it. 🚜

Just finished moving every single one of these boulders by hand. Light work. 💪

Once my completely true and not-at-all-exaggerated contribution was finished, we got to work building this 2-foot natural rock wall topped with an 8-foot cedar fence.

The result? Serious privacy, a ton of character, and a fence that looks like it belongs in the Hill Country—not something pulled off a shelf.

I’m gonna go get a water real quick, stay tuned - wooooooo.

MiniPools is proud to announce they are the recipient of a 2026 International Award of Excellence from the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA), the trade association representing the swimming pool, hot tub, and spa industry. MiniPools won the Merit Award, Small Backyard Installations for their Presidio neighborhood backyard transformation.

PHTA’s International Awards of Excellence program is one of the largest, most well-renowned design competitions in the pool and hot tub industry. These distinguished awards recognize exceptional installations of pools, spas, hot tubs, and water features that showcase the most beautiful, creative, and innovative work in the industry. Each year, hundreds of entries are submitted from across the U.S. and the world.

The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA), a non-profit organization with 4,000 members from around the world, was established in 1956 to support, promote, and protect the common interests of the $62B pool, hot tub, and spa industry. PHTA provides education, advocacy, standards development, research, and market growth initiatives to increase our members’ professionalism, knowledge, and profitability. Additionally, PHTA promotes the use of pools by expanding swimming, water safety, and related research and outreach activities aimed at introducing more people to swimming, making swimming environments safer, and keeping pools open to serve communities.

In construction, I’ve always said the bigger the challenge, the bigger the reward - and this garden home masterpiece proves it.

Zero equipment access. Tight quarters. All rock excavation of this MiniPool had to be hand dug and hauled out by wheelbarrow.

But when the sun goes down and the lights come on, you don’t see the difficult construction—you see what was possible.

A custom MiniPool, dramatic waterfall wall, glowing water features, and a backyard that completely changes after dark.

Limited access doesn’t mean limited luxury. If other builders see a problem, we see a design challenge worth solving.

Some outdoor fireplaces and fire pits fill a space. This one creates it. 🎯

Standing at an impressive 12 feet tall, this custom chopped block fireplace is truly “a hunk a hunk of burnin’ love” 🕺🏼 - filling the space with heat on cold days, and family and friends hearts with warmth all at the same time.

The extended stone “wing walls” on both sides aren’t just there for looks. They create added privacy, help block the wind, give a useful bar top, and of course give a beautifully stacked firewood area—all while giving the entire backyard a much more substantial, luxurious experience.

This is what happens when you stop thinking of a fireplace as an add-on and thoughtfully design it as part of the architecture. 📐🖋️
