Good soil needs the right balance of texture (clay, silt, sand), nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium), and microorganisms that feed your plants. When any of these are off, grass struggles, plants fade, and trees stop thriving.
Atlanta's red clay soil is notoriously heavy and compacts easily, which means poor drainage and stressed roots without proper preparation. That's why every Live Oak Manors project starts with an assessment of your soil, drainage, and site conditions, before a single plant goes in the ground.

It's called the “mulch volcano” piling mulch high against the trunk of a tree like a cone. It looks tidy, but it's actually killing your trees. When mulch touches the trunk, it traps moisture against the bark, leading to rot, disease, and pest infestations. It also encourages roots to grow upward into the mulch instead of down into the soil, which weakens the tree long-term.

The right way? Apply mulch in a flat, donut shape around the tree. Keep it 2–3 inches deep and at least 2–3 inches away from the trunk. Trees should look like donuts, not volcanoes.
