Charlotte Mason believes strongly in hands-on experimental science, but she reserved these types of lessons for upper elementary students beginning in year four. In today’s podcast, we'll talk about why this is important and still good advice for today's students.

How is your child at really 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨? How are you?

So much of the foundation laid in Form 1, from learning to narrate you brush drawing specimens to engaging in Special Studies, is strengthening the habit of 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. Nature Study is such a helpful way to practice this, because the natural world is always changing! Sometimes in minute, slow ways, and sometimes in sudden, big ones.

Have you sometimes felt ill at ease by Charlotte Mason's omission of formal Science from the programmes for grades 1-3? It was intentional! Nature Study has an intrinsic beauty in and of itself, AND helps lay the tracks for science and experimentation that is to come in later years.

It gives the study of Science purpose and framework instead of making it an abstraction for children.

How has Nature Study pleasantly surprised you? How has it challenged or grown your student? Comment below!

But what if I'm new to nature study? How can I help my child see when I don't know what to show them?

Take a lesson from your kids! Don't be afraid of messing up; follow their curiosity and you will grow a love of nature together ❤️.

To hear more of our discussion on this topic, tune in to Episode 343 as we look at Science in the Early Years. (Can count as Mom's "early years" too!)

Wondering how to structure outside time with your littles? MOST of their time should be spent in play, exploration, and without parent-guided activity.

However, there are also some ways you can begin to nudge your child to 𝘴𝘦𝘦, to 𝘸𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳, and to 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵. Check out Charlotte Mason's recommendations here☝️. And for more on the subject, read The Out of Door Life of Children section of Volume 1!

“Never be with indoors when you can rightly be without” is a common quote we hear in Charlotte Mason circles. But what are we supposed to be doing in all these hours outdoors? In today’s podcast episode we discuss the invaluable groundwork for Science that is laid in the early years before formal lessons begin.

A frequently stated goal of Charlotte Mason's method is "a full life". And Science is a cornerstone of that fullness, taking up more space on the timetable than any other subject but Language (including the combination of Grammar, Copywork, Dictation, Recitation, Latin, and all the world languages studied!)

How have you seen the study of science and nature accomplish this for yourself or your student(s)?
