As we continue exploring our project vault, we are pleased to highlight the Moss Library at Agnes Irwin, the dedicated Upper School library at this independent school for girls. Originally constructed in the 1960s, the library occupied an austere reinforced-concrete building organized across two levels with limited visual or physical connection between them. What was intended to serve as a unified academic hub instead functioned as two separate spaces, highlighting an opportunity to reimagine the library as a more connected, welcoming, and contemporary environment for learning.

To unify the library’s previously separate spaces, the new design introduced a generous opening in the upper level that looks down into the floor below. This creates a clear visual connection between the two levels, helping the library feel more open, integrated, and easy to navigate. We added a mezzanine-level reading lounge, adjacent to an outside glass wall. The two floors and mezzanine are all connected through an open stair with glass railings, increasing visibility at all levels. The design created a space that is legible and easy to supervise.

The new interior space is a more refined, modernist environment with ash paneling, slatted acoustical ceilings, limestone bases, muted carpeting, customized task lamps and ceiling fixtures, and cherry tables and chairs. Within its original footprint, the transformed library is welcoming, open and more spacious.

We are excited to have been part of the Greenburgh Nature Center’s vision to design a new and accessible Welcome Pavilion. This inspiring project creates a welcoming entrance and orientation gateway to the preserve, along with an adjoining composting toilet building it supports the Nature Center’s continued commitment to education, accessibility, and sustainability.

The new heavy-timber pavilion thoughtfully blends into its wooded surroundings while transforming the arrival experience. Gisolfi LLP reimagined the route into the Nature Center to create a more engaging and welcoming approach that reinforces its educational and environmental mission.

Our most recent Bronx River Pathway project involved rehabilitating and extending the trail from Oak Street in Mount Vernon to Scout Field in Yonkers. The project creates a continuous shared-use pedestrian and bicycle path through the natural greenway along the Bronx River.

A primary challenge was establishing a seamless connection between the deteriorated existing pathway south of the interchange ramps linking the Bronx River Parkway and the Cross County Parkway and the existing pathway at Scout Field to the north. The completed project closes this critical gap, creating an uninterrupted regional trail through Westchester County.

The 1.3-mile-long project features a 122-foot pedestrian bridge with ADA-compliant accessible ramps spanning the parkway interchange ramps. Along sections of the steep riverbank, extensive grading and terraced natural stone retaining walls were constructed to accommodate the pathway while minimizing impacts to the surrounding landscape. New timber guardrails were also installed where necessary to provide a safe and attractive barrier between pathway users and adjacent parkway traffic.

This new southern extension of the Bronx River Pathway enhances public access to one of Westchester County's most scenic natural corridors, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy a continuous greenway experience along the Bronx River while improving connectivity, accessibility, and recreational opportunities.

As we continue to look back on our portfolio, we would like to focus on the Bronx River Parkway landscape project. We have been working on various parts of the Bronx River Parkway since 1980 and continue to be a part of the wonderful work being done to revitalize the parkway.

“Our work along the Bronx River Parkway was really a landscape renovation or reconstruction. We could not restore it because the original drawings no longer existed. But we did construct new bridges, new paths, and a jogging trail, and we installed benches and new plantings. The Westchester County Parks Department adopted our path designs and bridge prototypes for other lakes along the parkway, north of our site.

My instinct for this project was to make a romantic or bucolic landscape — the type that Frederick Law Olmsted sought to create, inspired as he was by England’s master gardener, “Capability” Brown. Adopting the romantic landscape approach, we designed paths that meander sensuously in harmony with the topography and the new berms, and we grouped the new trees into naturalistic masses of native species.
The renovation of two miles of the Bronx River Parkway through the Westchester County communities of Bronxville, Tuckahoe, and Yonkers became an exercise in understanding landscape history and in personal nostalgia. – Peter Gisolfi, Finding the Place of Architecture in the Landscape

The St Aloysius Parish campus occupies a 4½-acre site bounded by Maple Street, South Avenue, Cherry Street, and Park Street in New Canaan, Connecticut. Beginning with a master plan, we developed a project that encompassed the design of two new buildings: an education center and a community building.

This project reimagines the parish campus as a cohesive, welcoming environment that strengthens community, faith, and education through thoughtful architectural design. By consolidating parish administration, adding spaces for religious education, and introducing a new education center and community building, the campus supports the evolving needs of its congregation while fostering meaningful engagement. A pedestrian-focused courtyard serves as the social and spiritual heart of the campus, unifying its buildings and encouraging connection. Reconfigured parking and circulation improve safety and accessibility, while the overall design embraces the environmental stewardship principles of Pope Francis' Laudato Si', creating a resilient and sustainable campus that reflects the mission and values of the parish.

Construction is currently wrapping up for the Education Center and is expected to be completed by the end of the summer.

In honor of GiSOLFi’ s fiftieth anniversary, we are highlighting past projects that have been part of our identity as architects and have Peter Gisolfi’s passion embedded in the fabric of the design.

The Guadalupe Center in Kerrville, Texas was the first project that pushed Peter Gisolfi Associates out of the realm of residential architecture. As our first hospitality project in 1979, it was among the first projects which highlighted the importance of integrating landscape and architecture during the design process. The Guadalupe center is a resort located on an 8 acre site, along the Guadalupe River. The project included 180 guest room apartments suites, garage parking and a waterfront recreation area with a pool, tennis courts, marina and restaurant pavilion.

“The design of the Guadalupe Center transforms an inward-looking courtyard scheme into an outward-looking series of buildings and open spaces that engage the broader landscape of the Guadalupe River Valley. The placement of the buildings defines a path from the preexisting inn to the waterfront recreation area. The buildings and landscapes use the motifs of southwest Texas — limestone, buff-colored masonry, clay tile, and trellises — to define an interconnected series of formal and informal outdoor spaces that descend gracefully from the level of the inn down 30 feet to the river and its unique landscape below.” –Peter Gisolfi, Finding the Place of Architecture in the Landscape

Peter Gisolfi Associates was founded in 1976 with a clear conviction: that architecture should belong to its place, culturally, naturally, and humanly. Fifty years on, that conviction has never been stronger.

We are proud to announce that the firm continues under a new name, Gisolfi LLP, and from a new home at 55 Woodside Avenue, Briarcliff Manor, NY, having relocated from our long-standing office in Hastings-on-Hudson.

The name has evolved.

The work continues to adapt, shaped by cultural context, refined by the learned craft of building, and deepened by five decades of practice.

Guided by the principles Peter established, Gisolfi LLP continues to practice Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Planning, and Interior Design with the same abiding commitment: to create places of beauty and harmony where buildings feel as though they could exist nowhere else, places that invite connection and reflection, evoke serenity and a sense of timelessness, and offer a genuine feeling of belonging.

We would love to hear from you, whether you are an old friend, a longtime collaborator, or someone encountering our work for the first time.
