This is a good picture explanation of ice dams.

Why do some homes have worse ice dams than others?
Most commonly the issue is related to insulation and construction. Most of these issues can be addressed so future concerns are not so prevalent.

Some winters ice dams will be worse due to snow load and temps. A fair amount of snow along with a little warmer day and cold nights creates the most ice dams.

It is best to allow the ice dams to melt naturally when possible. If there is a fear of water intrusion it is best to remove the ice dam.

We use steam in order to not cause any damage to the roof. Hammers, chisels, pressure washers, etc. all have a tendency to cause additional damage that will need to be repaired in the spring.

Feel free to call us if you are unsure whether you need your ice dam removed and we will give a free evaluations and recommendation.

Ice dams are starting to form. If you can remove the snow buildup it will significantly reduce the ice dam growth.

Call us and we can remove roof snow, ice dams, and clear frozen vent pipes.

We should be getting close to wrapping up this work for the season but there are a few out there that are still causing issues.
We worked on 2 last week that were causing major leaking inside the home.

Ice Dam Tips

How do you keep an ice dam from forming?
1. Better insulation. 2. Roof heat cable. 3. Remove snow from roof edge and valleys within 24 hours of snow falling. 4. Live where there is no snow :-)

Are some houses more prone to ice dams than others?
Absolutely! House built a few years ago typically have a shorter energy heal. This causes an area where more heat can escape to the roof causing more snow to melt early. This snow melt then freezes again when it reached the gutter edge where there is no heat. Newer homes have updated energy heal requirements but there can be other factors that cause this same issue.

Does removal of the ice dams cause damage?
In some cases, yes. The best thing for your roof is not to have someone walking on it and spraying water on it in the middle of winter. However, often removing the ice dam is the lesser of two evils and may be necessary. If your roof is able to melt properly and there is little risk of water intrusion, it is best to let nature melt the ice dam. If there is risk of water entering the attic and walls, then the risk of damaged shingles is worth it.
One home we did yesterday already had water coming in through the ceiling in the garage and living room. Another one had thousands of pounds of ice hanging on the gutter edge and knee-deep snow that still needed to melt. Another had ice over 5ft up the roof and valleys and calf deep snow that still needed to melt. Two didn't have water inside but very likely would have when the warmer weather comes.

If you are concerned feel free to touch base and we will check it out and give you our opinion if waiting is the best option or if melting it is the best option.

This may not look like much of a dam, but it was causing water damage in the home. This style construction has its issues anyway as you can see on the water damaged siding.

Somethings we learned today: Gutter guards help with keeping ice out of the gutter, but sometimes they cause damage to the shingles due to weight and the way the ice wants to slide off as it is released.
Ice dams are more fun to remove when the temps are above freezing and are a lot more work and a lot less fun when temps are below freezing.
Frozen water hoses are a pain in the neck! We carry a small air compressor to blow out every hose after every job. This way, they are ready to use when we get to the next job.
I have multiple snowpants that can stand on their own at the end of the day.

With warm weather coming, if you still have ice dams and snow on the roof, give us a call to get those dams steamed away.

Every bit of ice needs to be thawed from the roof before it is sent over the edge. Any prying, chipping, chopping, etc. has the potential of damaging shingles.
The Steam Machine allows high temp, low pressure water to do the work of releasing the ice from the shingle protecting the shingles.
Call us with your ice dam troubles and we'll steam your worries away.

ps. It's difficult to take a video, while on the roof, running a steamer :-)
