FLORIDA FACTS, UNFORTUNATELY β„– 11 πŸŽƒ
The fake webs went up this week. So did the real ones.
One's a $4 bag of stretchy webbing. The other one pays rent β€” free, symmetrical, and actually catching something.
Leave the real orb-weaver be. Tag the neighbor whose porch spider out-decorated them. πŸ‘‡

SWFL PEST ID β€” What's on the wall at 2am? πŸ”¦
Size and speed tell you more than instinct does:
πŸ•·οΈ Huge, fast, flat against the wall β†’ huntsman spider. An ally β€” it hunts roaches.
πŸ•·οΈ Hairy, low, sprinting along the floor β†’ wolf spider.
πŸ•ΈοΈ Glossy black, corner web, red mark β†’ widow. Give this one some distance.
🦎 Pale, chirping, upside down on the ceiling β†’ gecko. Free pest control.
Save this for the next 2am sighting. πŸ’Ύ Still not sure? DM us a photo β€” free ID. Or ID it yourself: wavespestcontrol.com/pest-identifier/

SNOWBIRD HOUSE WAKE-UP 🏑 Been closed up since April?
Before you unpack, take one lap: wing piles on the windowsills, droppings in a drawer, standing water in the gutters and the AC pan, daylight under the door sweeps. Ten minutes tells you who kept the house company while you were gone.
Welcome back. Send this to your favorite snowbird. πŸ“²

Three signs of large patch fungus, Venice edition:

1. Round yellow-orange rings that widen
2. Blades pull free easily at the base
3. Shows up in cool, wet stretches

Water in the morning only and let the turf dry between cycles. Seeing one of these? A quick inspection settles it.

NAME THAT SWFL BUG β„– 07 β€” the reveal: it's a Cuban treefrog. 🐸
Not a bug, and not from here. It arrived in the Florida Keys in the 1920s as a shipping stowaway and now works every porch light from Parrish to Venice.
βœ… How to tell: warty back, bug eyes, and toe pads far bigger than any native treefrog's
βœ… Wash your hands after touching one β€” the skin secretion burns eyes and nose for an hour or more
βœ… It eats our native treefrogs, and it likes to climb in through roof vent pipes (UF/IFAS)

Those painful stickers that stab your feet every spring? They start right now, in fall, when burweed germinates in the cooler nights. By spring the plant has already set those spiny burs, and spraying then is too late to save your feet. UF/IFAS timing says to hit it in the fall before it takes hold. Full breakdown on the blog. 🌱

Those painful spring lawn stickers start as fall-germinating burweed. Get the UF/IFAS timing Southwest Florida lawns need. Learn more.

NAME THAT SWFL BUG β„– 07 β€” Who's on the porch light? πŸ’‘
Hints: not a bug, and not from here. Bumpy back, bug eyes, huge toe pads, and a standing reservation at any lit-up window on the lanai from Parrish to Venice.
Bonus point for the species. Drop your guess below β€” reveal tomorrow. πŸ‘‡

White Grubs or Mole Crickets? Here is how Sarasota homeowners can tell the difference.

White Grubs: c-shaped larvae under the sod; turf peels back like carpet; roots chewed away underneath.
Mole Crickets: raised, spongy tunnels in the turf; small mounds of loose soil; soapy water flush brings them up.

Peels back or feels spongy? Different pest underground. Not sure which one you have? A quick inspection settles it.

PEST OF THE WEEK β„– 10 β€” the bigheaded ant. 🐜
October is when these show up along Sarasota and Bradenton driveways. Three things worth knowing:
1️⃣ One colony, two head sizes. The big-headed "majors" are only about 1 in 100 workers β€” spot one and you've found the species.
2️⃣ Those loose sandy piles between the pavers and along the driveway edge? That's them, excavating underneath. Their fragile debris-covered foraging tubes get mistaken for termite tubes β€” a photo settles it.
3️⃣ No sting, no structural damage. In much of South Florida they've actually pushed out fire ants (UF/IFAS).
Verdict: pavers messy, you're fine.
