Swipe through the story of The Walled Courtyard ➝
Every two years, a juried designer showhouse transforms one of the regions great houses to benefit the medical center grounds: 25,000 visitors in a single month, millions raised for charity, and not one permanent change allowed to the architecture.
In 2017 we were handed a sloping 15' × 40' courtyard, a dilapidated MRI service door, and a self-funded budget. We answered with a contemporary, art-filled living space: a mixed border anchored by an oversized steel sculpture, a 'cloud-pruned' boxwood garden, and an intimate seating area around a fire pit. A surprising palette of burgundy, blue, grey, and citrus played against the honey-toned brick, and plants were tucked in close to read as a mature garden from day one.
Nearly everything was locally sourced, lent, or donated, proof of what a community of makers can build together.
