Just a peek at MO's early June wildflowers to brighten your scrolling. Our mini meadow is filled with yarrow, black-eyed susan, blanket flower, glade and yellow coneflower, poppy mallow, and cosmos blooms right now. And native purple coneflower is dominating our backyard border these days.

This week we found a lot of monarch caterpillars on our butterfly w**d, an orange milkw**d species that thrives in dry conditions and sub-par soil. This is especially cool because helping monarchs was one of my first reasons for planting a mini meadow in our front yard. I love seeing the butterflies that flit about our gardens this time of year, but also the birds, skinks, toads, fireflies, bees, bats, and dragonflies that have also made our yard their home since we began planting natives, thinking about habitat, and using organic methods.

We have a little inconspicuous border of strawberries along our front entry garden next to the boxwoods and daisies because that's one of the sunniest spots in our yard. Most of the year, it just looks like ground cover but this season it is showing its true colors. Our harvest this year is bigger than it has been in the past, despite my mistake of leaving fallen leaves on the bed long enough into spring to harbor slugs. Organic gardening is not all successes but sometimes, despite the setbacks, it's a big mixing bowl full of bright fruit from one day's harvest.

Still looking for a Mother's Day gift? If the mom in your life is a gardener or if she's interested in becoming one, a set of gardening classes could be the perfect thing. In Havens Green summer classes, she will learn how to build and maintain healthy soil, how to deal with drought and pests in the garden, and how to use native Missouri flowers, ground covers, trees, and shrubs to create a yard that's beautiful, healthy, and easy to maintain. Classes will take place once a month in June, July and August. Message me if you would like to purchase this gift for your mom.

Winter is giving way to spring, and I'm back to work at Havens Green. This season will look a little different than my work last year as I have honed my vision and thought through what limits will allow me to do my best work and contribute most to growing for good in our community. So what is changing?

1) Instead of doing landscaping installations with borders, paths, and raised beds myself, I will be crafting garden designs and offering coaching to help you create the garden you are hoping for.

2) Instead of sorting through endless plant options, I will be limiting plant selections in my designs to those offered by a handful of local nurseries, eliminating shipping costs and damage, making your purchasing and planting easier, and blessing other businesses in our community.

3) Instead of joining the fray of standard garden design--of which there are already many good options--I will be designing gardens made of at least 50% native flowers, shrubs, and trees. These plants are often overlooked in our local designs but they are beautiful, affordable, and well-adapted to our conditions.

If you're interested in refining an existing garden that isn't working or creating a new haven, message me to schedule a free consultation to walk through your space and share your ideas. If you decide to go forward after that meeting, you will receive a hand-crafted garden blueprint tailored to you and your space, sketches of the garden in the different seasons, a list of specific plants to buy and where to find them, and step by step instructions on how to make it happen.

Resource Spotlight #6: The Vegetable Gardening Book by Joe Lamp'l

Everything Joe creates is so well done and engaging, focused on best practices, beautiful images, and interesting stories. I first found his work on Growing a Greener World, which--believe it or not--is my favorite TV series ever. :) But he also has created books, podcasts, and a website. It's all gold. Joe comes off as both down to earth and supremely nice, a guy you would want on your street to trade tomatoes and talk about berry bushes with. This book is a great starter guide for a vegetable garden novice or a great resource for a gardener farther down the road.
