Most potted-plant problems on a patio start before the first paver goes down.

A potted plant on a paver patio needs two things: a way to get water in, and somewhere for the overflow to go. Most people figure that out after the patio is built. That's how you end up with a hose across the pavers and stains under every pot.

On this patio we set a 6-inch square drain into the base. It carries overflow over into the planter bed, and it doubles as a sleeve for a half-inch irrigation line that comes up into the pot. No exposed line, and no water sitting on the stone.

20,312 pavers on one driveway. Every single one set by hand. 🤯

This is a 7,000 sq ft paver driveway in Eagle, laid in herringbone one paver at a time. Herringbone is the pattern you want under a car: every paver locks against its neighbors, so the driveway doesn't creep or shift when tires turn on it.

What you don't see matters more. Under the pavers: compacted road base, then a smooth bedding layer so every paver sits flat. The surface has two slopes that meet in the middle and carry water to a hidden drain. Polymeric sand goes into the joints and gets wet down to lock it all together.

The finishing touch is a 6-foot band of Westmount pavers in Shale Grey wrapping the whole perimeter.

Would you let us build this for you? Another one of our recent proposals, start to finish.

9,065 square feet of pavers. Six spaces. One continuous surface of stone.

Belgard Dimension 6 in Scandina Gray runs from the driveway through the front walk, the side walkway and a phase-two path, framed the whole way by a double sailor course of Brooklyn Graphite. That banding is the thread. It starts at the driveway and never breaks.

Out back, the material steps up to Dimension 12 large-format pavers across a 2,462 sq ft elevated patio, with linear slot drains so the terrace stays dry and level. About 60 linear feet of Melville wall block, stairs and graphite landings carry it down the grade.

The side walkway is the one most crews rush. It's also the one a homeowner walks every day, so it gets the same border, the same base and the same joint lines as the driveway.

Matt was supposed to be showing off the amphitheater. He took a nap on it instead. 😴

In his defense, those are 1,000-pound blocks of hand-cut sandstone. Somebody had to test them.

The new Education Amphitheater at the Idaho Botanical Garden in Boise: natural sandstone seating tiers cut at Table Rock, hand-laid break-in-place pavers with plants growing in the joints, and low-voltage lighting built in for after dark.

Next time you're at the Botanical Garden, grab a seat. They're very comfortable. Matt checked.

100 feet of block retaining wall, and behind it? Dirt. No drainage rock. No drain.

A retaining wall doesn’t fail because the block is weak. It fails because water has nowhere to go. Without drainage rock behind the wall, water builds up, pushes against it, and the wall starts to move. You can already see it in the lines on this one.
