🔥 The transformation is starting to come together.

After rebuilding the firebox correctly, establishing proper clearances, and installing a safe non-combustible hearth system, it was time for the finishing touches.

Back to our fireplace rebuild - Step 4: Installing a Non-Combustible Hearth System

The original hearth was sitting directly on combustible wood flooring, creating another major fire risk.

We installed a completely new non-combustible hearth system designed to safely withstand heat transfer and support long-term fireplace use.

Rebuilding a fireplace correctly takes more than good-looking stonework. Proper clearances, masonry construction, venting, and non-combustible materials all matter. This project is now being rebuilt the way it should have been from day one.

Next Step: Rebuilding the Firebox Properly

With the unsafe materials removed, we rebuilt the fireplace using a properly constructed masonry firebox designed for:

- Safe heat containment
- Proper expansion and contraction

Sometimes there’s no shortcut.

Once we uncovered the safety issues inside this fireplace system, the only proper solution was a full demolition of the firebox and hearth.

Here’s what we found once we opened up this fireplace system:

🚨 Firebrick installed directly against wood framing
🚨 No clearance to combustibles
🚨 Hearth sitting directly on wood flooring

This wasn’t just poor workmanship, it was a serious fire hazard.

Unfortunately, we see this more often than people realize, especially in newer renovations where appearance takes priority over proper fireplace construction.
