Soften & surrender ✨

Here’s a little texture check on this piece. I’m loving it so far, and hoping to have maybe one more pass of some areas that need detail before signing this one. Mostly on the disco ball and the background to layer color and shape. Trying to encapsulate a less is more approach and focus on the feeling of the flame and wax, rather than specifics. I am really happy with the glow and warmth of the candle wax 😍

Well, did I eat? 💅🏻 But seriously it’s true, art is my life, not a hobby. It’s why I made the shift almost a decade ago to get my masters degree and become an art teacher. I couldn’t keep living in a world where my work was separate than my art. And while technically I do my paintings “on the side”, they’re not so on the side (quite literally when I work with the iPad too because it goes everywhere with me). My art informs my teaching, and vice versa. I do also of course sell my art, so it is also my job, just a different component. I love that it’s not my full time job to paint because I get to pass my gift onto others, and also I never have to sacrifice my creativity and vision in order to pay my bills. It’s a win for everyone.

Whats interesting is when you think “digital painting” it’s easy to conflate with AI, but I make each brushstroke individually with the Apple Pencil. No gimmicks, no shortcuts. The only difference is the paint isn’t wet. It took me a long time to replicate my oil paining style in the digital realm. I do still oil paint of course though ♥️
