While quality craftsmanship is what we pride ourselves in at Alleviate Interior & Exterior Home Solutions LLC, the quality of the products we install is just as important.
At first glance, a .012” difference in wall thickness might not seem like a big deal—but it’s a topic worth discussing.
The pipe pictured on top is Type L (blue label) with a wall thickness of .040”. The pipe on the bottom is Type M (red label) with a wall thickness of .028”. This difference typically translates to about a 25% increase in material cost for Type L.
That extra thickness matters for longevity. Type M generally lasts 25–50 years, while Type L often lasts 50–70+ years when installed correctly—potentially outliving the home itself.
When it comes to your home, protection should always be priority number one. We deliver the same high-quality craftsmanship no matter which option you choose, but opting for the upgraded material is often a smart long-term investment.
Our goal with this post is simple: to inform our clients. Many homeowners we’ve worked with had no idea there was even a difference in something as seemingly simple as a water supply line. We want you to have all the facts so you can make the best decision for your project and your home.
At Alleviate, we’re committed to delivering quality work and helping you make informed choices that will serve you well for decades to come.

Wish we would’ve gotten more progression pictures during tear-out. These KERDI shower systems definitely do not have the next guy in mind. This is the first one we have ever come across that we had to tear-out, and we can tell you, they are not fun to remove.

We walked in on a halfway complete shower that had a tile that had busted and was unable to be removed and repaired while maintaining a warranty that we could stand behind. These pictures are of the final stages of the tear out and there is still a bit of prep work to do before we can begin installing the new shower

While some may see it as a strong and durable product and that it is sound, all walk-in showers fail at some point. Schluter’s KERDI-BOARD System has a 10 year manufacturers warranty, which is great that a warranty is provided, that being said, most walk-in showers fail around 15-20+ years down the road if installed and maintained properly. We understand that it is inevitable, more of these are to come, as this is a newer system that has been in production since around 2010.
While we apologize to our future homeowners that have had this system previously installed, the tear out is going to be priced accordingly.

After this project, we will no longer be recommending the Schluter KERDI-BOARD System to any homeowner. It’s a great product in theory, and it will out-live all of us here on earth currently; in a landfill. We hope we don’t begin to start seeing strings of these failing all at once, tear-out on this shower has taken every bit of 5x longer than it should have, and it’s not because our boys aren’t doing their job..

(2/2) To Alleviate the problem, we pulled all of the work that had been done prior out, and started from scratch. Building temporary support walls for the joists tying into the header, removing and replacing the box header that was supporting the structural load of the joist under the bathroom, installing a load beam spanning from the I-Beam and passing it through to the top of the exterior sill plate, and for added assurance, sistering joists running the entire span of the original joists, jacking the structure to level, shimming load beams and installing joist hangers on all of the joists, with engineered screws tying the joists in to the box header.

And yes, there is one missing joist tie, it was a long week, and our boys were tired. It will be installed Monday, cut us some slack 😂

(1/2)We walked in on a job that had been started by another crew. The homeowners had a master bath remodel project that they were working on, the floor was sinking toward the center of the house. Circled in the pictures is the problematic area where the structure was failing. The joist had been cut through in order to accommodate plumbing, ultimately leading to structural failure (sagging). While the crew that had taken the project on before we walked on the job, had the right idea in trying to sister joists onto the existing joists, it was not done properly, this area is not directly in line with the load wall, it is the next in line to the load joist/beam running parallel with the the load wall.

Note: We had began to start on the project before pictures were taken. Sometimes our guys get a little ahead of themselves…. Zach!

Change orders are almost inevitable when having work done on your home, you just never know what you’re going to run into, we ran into some galvanized plumbing while a project was underway. Our client did not want to change the plumbing immediately, after talking it over, we agreed to at least pull it apart to assess the drain. Yes, we are replacing it and there was a change in line item pricing, it’s going to happen.

If you suspect that you have galvanized plumbing and want it removed, we’re happy to help!
