Well, the season has officially ended with 3 pumpkins making it to the scale!

Against all expectations after a terrible start to the year, we even broke 1000+ pounds. BARELY, but we did. We had:

Joker-697 pounds

B.B.O.B….P.- 871 pounds

Uncle Sam- 1003 pounds

The year was especially tough for all the growers out there, and it was nice to see success from the other growers that I have gotten to know as well, even if it wasnt the numbers any of us hoped… a pumpkin on the scale is a win.

First place was taken back by Robert Broyan with his 1217 pound beauty. Great job by a great grower! We will have to see if we can give his expert skill and dedication to the hobby a run for the top spot again next year. I know we have already been swapping ideas back and forth on things to change or improve next year, so hopefully we can make it a good contest! This is a great part about this hobby… seeing other great growers succeed, and then having them help you learn as well. Everybody is always willing to share and help.

Thanks to everyone that has played along this season and followed our hobby. We will hopefully be collecting seeds from some of these pumpkins at the end of fall and we will dry them and do a few germination tests and save them for next spring to possibly grow next year’s giants.

If anybody would be interested in any seeds or getting some seedlings that are already germinated and tossing them in the ground to try to grow your own giant pumpkin, feel free to reach out to us! We are certainly not experts, but we have learned a lot over our short time growing these things, and would be more than happy to share what we have and know to boost other’s chances of success.

Come to the weigh-off !!

4pm today, Friday September 19th, 2025. The back of the Agricaltural Building.

Help spread the word!

***The weigh-off is in the back of the Agriculture Building, open to the public, but not properly advertised or communicated with the public. You have had to walk around and come in the back of the building to watch in years past with no signs or way of knowing this…. They have other judging going on in the building at the same time and the front doors are closed and locked 🙄🤷🏼‍♂️. I don’t know how it will be run this year, but regardless of details on how to get in, that is where and when it is… so show up and im sure walking around back will work****

Pumpkins were loaded and moved into the fairgrounds! There were more to come in beyond what was in these photos, but there were already a nice group when we arrived with our

Thanks for playing along, everyone. It’s been another eventful year and we are heading down the home stretch.

This will be our final update before we make our attempt to haul these pumpkins to the fair. Growth has slowed to a crawl, but they all have made some gains. There will be a final push between now and next week, and then we hold on and hope they arrive safely at the Fair and can get on display for all to see.

Random side note to any interested individuals…. If anyone is around Friday, the pumpkins will be weighed in the back of the Agriculture mid day ish. More info to follow as to specific time when we know for sure.

The pumpkin season is continuing. Every giant pumpkin grower knows that it’s not over until they’re on the scale, and this year is no different. Unfortunately the oddity of what has become the growing conditions of this year have continued and we are now into very cool temperatures overnight, limiting any larger numbers for daily growth from here on out.
More unfortunate than cold temperatures comes the news that we have officially had some pumpkins that died.

I am sad to report that Frankenstein and SpongeBob have had their final days in the patch. Frankenstein was measuring 407 pounds when we discovered the blossom end was rotting and opened a hole into the cavity of the pumpkin. This is 100% a circumstance that will lead to rot in a few days/ weeks and death. We have since this time allowed several other pumpkins to start growng on this plant in hopes of having some nice BIG jackolanterns for halloween. It is far too late in the seasn to have anything competitive off of this plant. We did cut it open to collect some seeds as well as examine the wall thickness. It was turning into a very nice orange color and had good wall thickness as well. Maybe it can give us some offspring next year in the garden!

SpongeBob was a bit more odd. This plant has been the best growing, biggest leaves, nicest cooperating with the crazy weather plant anyone could ask for. The pumpkin started off strong but stalled its growth a little while back. This was concerning… unfortunately when doing our weekly measurements, we found that a large portion of the bottom of the pumpkin had started to rot. We have no solid reason as to why this happened. Sometimes it just is in the cards to happen. There are a few small pumpkins, al hopefully to have jackolanterns started on the plant as well. We collected a good number of seeds from SpongeBob and will hope that we can carry on the amazing plant growth into the next generation.

On a final negative news note, while not a total loss (…..yet 🙄) Gourdzilla is not cooperating. This pumpkin has been slow growing for some reason and has developed a whole lot of growth cracks around its stem. We haven’t seen any cracks make their way into the cavity of the pumpkin at this time, meaning death, but it has never “turned on” in terms of growth and is staying very small. At this point in the season, and with its very limited size and questionable behavior with cracks, we are shooting to use this pumpkin for home/ Halloween decor. Time will tell and we are hoping it holds on a few more weeks!

In happier news, we still have 3 pumpkins trucking along to hopefully get to the finish line!

They certainly won’t be as large as what we closed the season with last year, but after the ugly conditions that we have faced and the ever present unknowns of “luck”, we are crossing all fingers and toes that they can hold together for the home stretch and we will be able to get them on display at the fair, regardless of breaking our own previous best.

Joker- this guy seems to be staying a round shape, burnt cream/ cinnamon pumpkin. It measured 615 pounds last Monday.

Uncle Sam- While the plant never turned into much for size, the pumpkin has turned out to be a fairly shiny orange, flat, lumpy-topped pumpkin. It measured 726 pounds last Monday.

B.B.O.B.P- this pumpkin has stayed round in shape with a big crease in the blossom end, and is orange as well. It measured 747 pounds last Monday.

We will have another update or two, and then hopefully we will be sharing that we are at the fair!

Here is an update on the pumpkins as of Monday 8-11-25.
All 6 of the pumpkins are still growing, which in and of itself is a win, though we were hoping for a bit more growth for our daily averages compared to last week. This is definitely not turning out to be a record year, but thats how things go sometimes. We will press on and have hap-hap happiest pumpkin growing season since Bing Crosby tapdanced with Danny Kaye. The dry weather and a couple cool nights haven’t been helping, but any growth is better than no growth. We will keep some updates coming and hopefully everything stays together for a few more weeks and we pack on some more pounds.
Thanks for following along! All of the pumpkins have names now as well as some having mascots (which make for a good size/ scale reference in pictures as they grow).
