Except at Iserman Contracting & Excavating, we're crushing problems.

We're all pretty deep in the day-to-day around here, so our weekly L10 gives us a chance to come up for air, get on the same page, talk through what's happening, and actually solve the things that need attention.

Then we get to IDS: Identify. Discuss. Solve.

Although, based on today's meeting photo, we've apparently introduced a fourth step:

When the Footing Gives Up, We Don't.

We recently had a deck where the original footings had failed.
Not exactly the surprise anyone wants to find under a deck.
Instead of replacing them with traditional concrete footings, we installed helical piers to provide new footing support.

They're a pretty handy tool: less excavation, solid footing support, and no concrete pour or curing time holding up the footing installation.

And here's where Minnesota gets interesting:

Winter doesn't have to mean waiting. ❄️

This project was done in the summer, but we've installed helical piers in the middle of January. Our owner, Gene, adapted our auger to work through frozen ground, because apparently Minnesota wasn't going to make things easy for us.

Winter installation can actually be a great way to get the footings out of the way before spring, avoiding delays from thawing ground, concrete conditions, or spring road restrictions.

Get the footings in. Hit the ground running when spring arrives.
The ground may be frozen, but your project doesn't have to be on ice.

Minnesota rain has a way of exposing problems you didn't know you had. 🌧️

Earlier this spring, we worked on a New Brighton home where heavy rains were causing water intrusion.

And let's be honest, when water starts getting into your house, nobody stands there calmly thinking, “Well, this is an interesting drainage opportunity.” 😂

You panic.

The good news is that getting water away from your home doesn't always require some enormous, complicated project. A professional excavator can often solve the problem by correcting the grade and giving the water a better path.

That's what we did here. We regraded around the house and replaced the concrete, and the homeowners no longer have to worry about water coming in when it rains.

Sometimes the fix is simply teaching the water where it should go. 🌧️➡️

Minnesota will keep sending us the rain. We might as well make sure it knows where to go when it gets here. 😂

One thing about excavation... it is never boring. 😂

We recently had another 100+ year-old Minneapolis house that sent our crew on a little sewer-line scavenger hunt.

The locators marked where the pipe should be.

It wasn't there.

So our crew kept hunting, carefully following where the line should be without turning the customer's yard into a disaster zone.

And eventually, they found it several feet off to the side underground. No where near where the locators marked it. No where near where the line inside indicated it was coming out from the basement.

Apparently, this particular sewer line decided to have it's own adventure over the years. 😂

We replaced the damaged line, added a new exterior cleanout for easier access in the future, and kept the excavation as minimal as possible.

Another underground adventure successfully completed.
