Just a friendly reminder to switch your heat pumps to emergency heat during this winter storm. Heat pumps will ice over and cause your unit to work harder causing issues later on. Of course as temps drop outdoors the efficiency of your heat pump drops drastically. Run your emergency/ auxiliary heat to keep your family comfortable and hopefully save you so headache in the coming days! Thanks and stay safe!

Why Ice Storms Are Risky for Heat Pumps:

If you notice it is not staying warm in the house, you might have ice build-up outside.

Ice Damage: Falling icicles or buildup can break the fan motor.

Reduced Airflow: Ice buildup on the coils reduces efficiency and restricts necessary airflow.

Safety Hazard: A heavily frozen unit can become a safety hazard.
If your home is staying warm, the heat pump is likely working properly, even if it has some ice buildup.

Key Tips for Heat Pumps in Ice Storms

Use Emergency Heat only in emergencies: If the unit is heavily iced, switch to "Emergency Heat" or "Auxiliary Heat" on your thermostat. This stops the outdoor fan from striking built-up ice and breaking.

Monitor Defrost Cycles: It is normal for a heat pump to make loud "whooshing" sounds and steam during defrost cycles.

Clear Debris Gently: Remove sleet or snow from around the unit, but do not use sharp tools, which can damage coils.

Protection: Do not cover the top of the unit completely, as this restricts airflow. A, 3-sided, elevated, or sloped, structure can protect it, but it should not directly sit on top.

Check for Damage: If the unit is covered in more than 1+ inches of ice, it is safer to turn it off to avoid damaging the motor.

Any other tips from our HVAC pros?
