47 retaining walls across 2.5 acres at Bachelor View. From the air it looks like a lot of dirt. Get closer and it's the water truck keeping the dust down, the dozer shaping the ground, the haul trucks moving every load, and an operator in the seat who reads the ground. The ground goes first, and everything built here depends on it. What part of the job do you want to see up close next?

Total control is the part of heavy civil nobody thinks about. Our inspectors, our concrete guy, our paving guys, our sequence. Then you pull onto a commercial site where somebody else is the general, the conduit is the electrician's, the water and sewer is the plumber's, and your day depends on six other trades hitting theirs. It is less running a job and more holding hands.

Tear into a phone line and you'll see why we call them rainbow roots. New site, so the ground we're digging is clean. The risk is right next to it. Communications and power on the far side of the wall we just dug footings for, and a big gas line running under the sidewalk. Always call your locates, and stay out of the rainbow roots.
Ever seen someone skip the locate call? How'd that go?

We call it scratch and sniff. He scratches, you sniff. Digging next to existing underground utilities comes down to about a half second. You see the line before the machine feels it. Scare tape in the dirt, the bucket catching the edge of the ditch, a rock that stops the operator short. The good fill is the dangerous part. Nothing to feel, easy to dip a little too deep.

Why you won't catch the crew running across a Steele Earthworks job site anymore.

When Tony was coming up, if you weren't running, you didn't have a job. That was just the work ethic. Move fast or don't bother showing up.

Now OSHA says otherwise, so the crew makes a point of it. Walking, not running. Officially certified and everything.

Anybody who's been in this industry long enough has watched that rule change in real time.

Why the underground utilities always end up tangled together right at the building on a commercial site.

Out in the open ground, trenching is straightforward. Sewer, water, power, fire line — they all run their own path until they get close to the structure.

Then everything converges. Every utility has to tie in at the same spot, so what starts as clean trenches turns into what we call a spaghetti factory by the time it hits the building.

We're spotting pipe by hand through there right now, careful not to stub too far or hit something already in the ground, while the newer guys learn how to read it.

Anybody who's dug commercial has run into this.

Why the excavator digs the plumbing and electrical trenches on a Central Oregon job site.

Around Portland, plumbers and electricians have their own skid steers and minis and cut their own trenches. Out here it's rock, so the hammer comes out and that work falls to us.

Murphy Rd sits in the gray area. Bigger than a house, not heavy civil, and the excavator ends up doing more of the heavy lifting than the plans make it look like.

Anybody who's subbed out here has run into this.

The small stuff is what people never see and it's exactly what makes a job hold up.
Take pipe assembly. Use the right lubricant, in the right amount, and the joint seats clean. Skip it or skimp on it, and you risk a rolled or cut gasket. The kind of mistake that shows up later as a failed chlorination test, not on install day. That's why every pipe gets cleaned before it goes together. No shortcuts, no guessing.
It's not glamorous work. But it's the difference between a job that's actually done right and one that just looks done.
