📌 Spiro Mounds — Spiro, Oklahoma

Spiro Mounds is one of the most significant Indigenous archaeological sites in North America and served as a major ceremonial, political, and economic center of the Mississippian world between approximately AD 800 and 1450. Situated along the Arkansas River, the 150-acre complex contains 12 mounds, village areas, and evidence of extensive trade networks that connected Spiro to cultures stretching from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes.

LiDAR reveals several of the surviving earthworks, including portions of the mound complex and surrounding landscape that once formed the westernmost major center of the Mississippian cultural sphere. The site became famous—and infamous—in the 1930s when treasure hunters tunneled into Craig Mound and uncovered a remarkable burial chamber filled with preserved textiles, shell carvings, copper objects, and ceremonial artifacts. Although many artifacts were dispersed into private collections, the discoveries transformed archaeological understanding of Mississippian culture and helped inspire stronger preservation laws.

Today, the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center preserves one of Oklahoma's most important archaeological landscapes, offering a rare opportunity to explore the remains of a sophisticated Indigenous center whose influence extended across much of prehistoric North America.
