Acoustic ceilings, or popcorn in kitchens and bathrooms are constantly fighting the steam. Steam from showering, or cooking wreaks havoc on ceilings over time. Painting can help keep it in place, but in most homes it gets sprayed on and that's it. Over time you'll notice it start to fall off. Around A/C vents or even worse over a stove.it's always where it scrapes off the easiest.
