“Something magical began to happen among the villagers. As each person opened their heart to give, the next person gave even more. And as this happened, the soup grew richer and smelled more delicious.” -Stone Soup
With the news lately, it’s hard not to feel anxious, depressed, fearful, restless, overwhelmed, maybe even hopeless or helpless. I know I’ve been feeling the heaviness of it all. But this quote from Stone Soup reminds me of the abundance and resilience of our collective diverse resources. I’m doing my best to focus on this abundance and resilience. Resilience in natural systems means there is a diversity of species, all fulfilling their individual niches that contribute to the strength and survival of the overall ecosystem. In our communities, too, our individual experiences, perspectives, insights and talents can help us adapt and support one another to find our collective abundance even during challenging times.
Prairie State Petals started with the idea of bringing joy to people through the beauty of native plants. More and more I feel compelled to create resilient landscapes that are filled with diverse edible fruits and vegetables to provide food security while still incorporating native plants to provide habitat and food for wildlife, including our essential pollinators. Permaculture is a design system that does this and more.
Join me as I embark on my Permaculture journey to become a certified Permaculture Designer.
In the interest of sharing the abundance, as I learn I’ll be providing small steps you can take around your own yard, balcony, patio, home or apartment to build abundance and resilience.
Planting a seed is an inevitable investment and hope for the future. Let’s plant the seeds of abundance and resilience in our yards and communities together.
