The backpacks are packed, the pencils are sharpened, and the school buses are back on the roads! Bones and Jorge are ready to remind everyone that getting our kids to school safely is everybody’s job.
A few Minnesota school bus safety reminders as we kick off another school year:
RED LIGHTS = STOP! When a school bus is stopped with its red lights flashing, you must stop at least 20 feet from the bus and remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing. The 2026 Minnesota law also makes clear that the red flashing lights—not simply the position of the stop arm—are what require traffic to stop.
This applies whether you’re approaching the front or rear of the bus. The major exception is when the bus is on the opposite side of a divided roadway with a physical divider.
AMBER LIGHTS = SLOW DOWN & GET READY TO STOP. They are your warning that the bus is preparing to stop. Don’t try to sneak around the bus when those lights are flashing.
WATCH FOR LITTLE PEOPLE! Kids don’t always look both ways, and they can be unpredictable. Slow down around bus stops, watch for children crossing, and give buses plenty of room.
And please remember: A few extra seconds isn’t worth a child’s life.
