Yesterday we shared the story behind a stained-glass window that’s been waiting years for the right home. Now we’re taking you a little deeper into how you actually build around something this unique.

From placement and protection to energy efficiency and structural planning, our latest Build Guide
looks at what goes into incorporating stained glass into a new custom home.

Some parts of a custom home are chosen from a catalog. Others have been waiting years for the right home.

Our client rescued this stained-glass window from a church that was going to be torn down many years ago. She has carefully kept it ever since, knowing that someday she wanted it to become part of her forever home.

That home is now being built on the river in Clarkesville.

Her vision is for the stained glass to have a prominent place where it can be enjoyed from inside the home as sunlight passes through it, while also being visible to family and visitors as they come down the driveway.

Our job is figuring out how to make that vision work while protecting this fragile piece of history and maintaining the comfort and energy efficiency of the new home. That means considering insulated and protective glazing, glare, placement, and some details we don’t encounter on an ordinary window installation.

Our first step was creating a full-size template of the stained-glass window so we can frame the opening accurately and work with stained-glass and glazing professionals to develop the right solution.

This is a first for us—and exactly the kind of challenge that makes custom homebuilding interesting.

We’ll be sharing this one as it develops, from the stained glass safely stored in its protective crate today, through construction, and ultimately to the day it takes its permanent place in the home it has been waiting for.

(And a quick pic of the deer that live in the back yard where the client is living now.)

Partnering with our friends at Dead Wood Tables to prepare a stack of air dried white oak to be ready for a monumental window wall. The stack started out looking rough and grey. After several passes on each side in the planer, the final product is beautiful and ready to acclimatize in the house that will be its future home. This is some gorgeous wood. We can’t wait to see it trimming out this view.

In our latest Build Guide, we take a look at what really makes a home efficient, comfortable and built to perform for decades. Read Efficiency: Designed Into the Home and see why some of the most important decisions happen before construction ever begins.

When people hear the words energy-efficient home, they often think first about products: better insulation, more efficient windows, a high-efficiency heat pump, LED lighting, or energy-efficient appliances. All of those things can matter. But none of them, by themselves, make a home efficient.A truly...

🏡 WEEKLY BUILD GUIDE: What Makes a Home Healthy?

A beautiful home isn't necessarily a healthy home.

The way a home manages fresh air, moisture, humidity, natural light and even the materials used inside it can affect the environment your family lives in every day.

And here's something many homeowners don't realize:

A house doesn't need to breathe. People do.

The goal is to control where fresh air comes from—not let humid, unfiltered outside air find its way through gaps in walls, attics, windows and other parts of the structure.

This week's Cutler Structures Build Guide looks at how thoughtful design can create a home that's healthier from the beginning—including moisture control, ventilation, filtration, radon planning, garage separation and natural light.

Because a healthy home shouldn't be something you try to create after problems appear.

It should be designed that way from the start.

When we talk about building a healthy home, it can be easy to think only about the things we want to keep out: mold, radon, chemicals, pollutants, and excessive humidity. Those things certainly matter. But we believe a healthy home should be defined by more than the absence of something harmful. It sh...

This week’s Build Guide with Cutler Structures asks an important question: What is a high-performance home?

It’s about much more than energy efficiency. A truly high-performance home is designed around five key principles: comfort, durability, efficiency, health, and resilience.

From better air sealing and moisture management to healthier indoor air and lower energy use, these systems work together to create a home that feels better, lasts longer, costs less to operate, and performs for generations.

If you're planning to build, this is a great look at what should be happening behind the walls—not just what you see when the home is finished.

This week’s Build Guide with Cutler Structures discusses durability—and why a truly durable home is designed that way from the very beginning.

From managing water and moisture to controlling air movement and planning for structural forces, the choices made during design and construction can determine how a home performs 10, 20, or even 50 years down the road.

Read this week’s Build Guide to learn what really makes a home built to last.

They picture brick instead of siding, metal roofing instead of shingles, or hardwood flooring instead of carpet. While material selection certainly plays a role, true durability begins long before the finishes are chosen.

Work in progress on a beauty in Skylake. This one is really perched on the side mountain but the view from the dining room is going to be awesome as soon as that film comes off of the windows during final cleaning.
