If your home has two water heaters and one fails, do you need to replace both?

Not necessarily.

The answer depends on:
• The age of both water heaters
• Whether they were installed together
• The condition of the second tank
• How the water heaters are connected
• How much hot water your home actually uses

If both tanks are the same age and already near the end of their expected lifespan, replacing both may prevent another failure and installation soon afterward. If the second water heater is newer and in good condition, there may be no reason to replace it.

Our latest blog explains what we look at before recommending one replacement or two.

Because a cold shower should be by choice.

When two water heaters were installed together but only one develops a problem, homeowners often wonder whether they should replace one or both. The answer depends largely on their age, condition, configuration, and your household’s hot-water needs.

Does your water heater’s pilot light keep going out?

A pilot that goes out once may only need to be relit. But if it repeatedly goes out or won’t stay lit after you release the control k**b, something isn’t working correctly.

Possible causes include:
• A failing thermocouple or thermopile
• A weak or restricted pilot flame
• Inadequate combustion air
• Drafts or venting problems
• A gas-supply issue
• A failing gas control valve

Our latest blog explains why this happens, when you can try relighting the pilot, and when it’s time to call a plumber.

Read more at the link below.

If you smell gas, don’t attempt to relight the water heater. Leave the area and contact your gas supplier from a safe location.

A pilot light that goes out once may be a temporary issue. If it repeatedly goes out or won’t stay lit, the water heater may have a problem that needs to be diagnosed.

❌ Water Heater Myth Thursday

Myth: “If my water heater is under warranty, the entire repair or replacement will be free.”

Truth: Water heater warranties vary, and manufacturer coverage doesn’t always include every cost involved.

Depending on the warranty and the problem, it may cover the tank or a replacement part but not necessarily:

• Labor
• Diagnostic charges
• Permits
• Removal and disposal
• Shipping
• Plumbing updates
• Materials needed to connect the replacement

Coverage can also change based on the age of the unit and whether it was registered.

Before assuming what is or isn’t covered, locate the water heater’s data plate and warranty information. We can help determine the unit’s age, identify the problem, and explain what your options actually are.

đź’ˇWater Heater Wednesday
Need a quote for a standard tank-style water heater replacement? Good photos can often save you from needing an appointment before we provide the price.

For the most accurate quote, send us photos showing:

• The entire water heater from several feet away
• The pipes and expansion tank above it
• The venting on a gas water heater
• The manufacturer data plate

The goal isn’t professional photography, we just need to see the water heater, its connections, and the space around it.

For many standard tank-style replacements, Hot Water Solutions can provide an upfront price using photos and information over the phone.

What is that small tank installed above your water heater, and do you really need it?

A water heater expansion tank doesn’t provide extra hot water. It gives heated water room to expand, helping control pressure inside a closed plumbing system.

When properly sized, charged, installed, and supported, an expansion tank helps protect your:

• Water heater
• Plumbing fixtures
• Supply lines
• Appliance connections

Our latest blog explains how expansion tanks work, why many homes need one, and why simply attaching one to the pipe isn’t enough.

Does your water heater keep tripping the breaker?

A breaker is designed to shut off power when it detects an unsafe electrical condition. If it trips again after being reset, repeatedly turning it back on isn’t fixing the problem.

Common causes can include:

• A failed heating element
• A malfunctioning thermostat
• Loose or damaged wiring
• Water reaching electrical components
• A problem with the breaker or circuit

Our latest blog explains what these problems mean, when the breaker should be left off, and whether the water heater may be repairable.

A water heater that repeatedly trips its breaker may have a failed heating element, damaged wiring, a thermostat problem, or an overloaded circuit. Here’s why the breaker should not be repeatedly reset.

Is your water getting warm but never quite hot enough?

It doesn’t always mean the entire water heater has failed. The problem could be a temperature setting, a failed heating element, a burner issue, increased hot water use, or even a problem with one plumbing fixture.

In our latest blog, we explain some of the most common reasons a water heater stops producing enough hot water and when the problem may be worth repairing.

If your water is warm but never quite hot enough, the problem could be the temperature setting, a worn component, increased demand, or the water heater itself. Here are some of the most common causes we find.

⏳ How Long Does a Water Heater Last?

One of the questions we hear from homeowners is:

"How much longer do you think my water heater has?"

The honest answer?

It depends.

We've replaced eight-year-old water heaters with leaking tanks, and we've seen 25 year old units still working.

Age matters, but it's only one piece of the puzzle.

In our newest blog, we explain:
âś” The average lifespan of tank and tankless water heaters
âś” What actually affects their lifespan
âś” Signs it may be time to start planning for a replacement
âś” Why age alone doesn't tell the whole story

❌ Water Heater Myth Thursday

Myth: "If my water heater is still making hot water, it's fine."

Truth: Making hot water is only part of the story.

We often see water heaters that are still producing hot water but also have:

• Small leaks
• Rust beginning to form
• Worn-out components
• Installation issues
• Signs the tank is nearing the end of its life

A water heater doesn't have to stop working completely before it starts telling you something's wrong.

Paying attention to those warning signs can help you avoid an unexpected cold shower, or worse, water damage.

🔧 Today's Installation Spotlight

Yesterday we replaced two 25-year-old A.O. Smith water heaters for a homeowner in Alpharetta.

The original units had served the home well, but after 25 years it was time for an upgrade.

We installed two new A.O. Smith GCG-50 400 gas water heaters and brought the installation up to today's standards by including:

âś” Removal and disposal of both old water heaters
âś” Two new A.O. Smith 50-gallon gas water heaters
âś” A new 4.5-gallon thermal expansion tank
âś” New drip pans under both water heaters
âś” Five new isolation ball valves for easier future servicing
âś” New gas connector whips
âś” New fittings and piping to properly connect everything to the existing plumbing

One thing we always tell homeowners is that replacing a water heater isn't just about swapping out the tank. A quality installation includes updating the components around it so the entire system is safe, reliable, and easier to service in the future.

Thank you for trusting Hot Water Solutions with your home!

Because a cold shower should be by choice.
