💡 Water Heater Tip Tuesday

When did you last check the expiration date on your carbon monoxide alarms?

Replacing the batteries doesn’t make an alarm last forever. The sensors inside carbon monoxide alarms eventually reach the end of their useful life, and the replacement date is usually printed on the back or side of the unit.

Take a few minutes today to:
• Press the test button
• Check the alarm’s expiration or replacement date
• Replace expired alarms
• Confirm you have alarms near sleeping areas and on each level of the home
• Follow the manufacturer’s placement instructions

A carbon monoxide alarm is especially important in homes with gas or propane appliances, fireplaces, or an attached garage.

If an alarm sounds, move everyone, including pets, outside and call 911 or the fire department. Don’t remain inside trying to locate the source.

Why does your water heater turn on when no one is using hot water?

Some periodic reheating is completely normal for a tank water heater. The stored water gradually loses heat, and the unit turns on to bring it back to the set temperature.

But if your water heater suddenly begins running more frequently, there may be another explanation, including:
• A dripping hot water faucet
• A hidden hot water leak
• A recirculation pump running continuously
• A plumbing crossover
• A thermostat or gas control problem
• A dishwasher or washing machine using hot water
• A temperature setting that is higher than necessary

Myth: “If the water heater turns on when no one is using hot water, something must be wrong.”

Truth: A tank water heater normally turns on periodically to keep the stored water hot.

Even when no one opens a faucet, the water inside the tank gradually loses heat. Once the temperature drops, the burner or electric elements turn on to heat it again.

It may need attention when it:
• Suddenly runs much more often
• Operates for unusually long periods
• Produces excessively hot or inconsistent water
• Causes an unexplained increase in utility costs
• Runs because of a hidden leak or recirculation problem

Occasional reheating is normal. A significant change in how often it happens may be worth investigating.

If your water heater starts operating differently, pay attention to when it happens.

Before calling for service, make a quick note of:

• When the problem started
• Whether it affects every fixture or only one
• Whether the hot water is too hot, too cold, or inconsistent
• Any flashing lights or error codes
• Any unusual sounds or odors
• Whether the problem happens constantly or only at certain times

A short video can also be extremely helpful, especially if the noise or error disappears before the plumber arrives.

These details can help us narrow down whether the problem is coming from the water heater, a fixture, a recirculation system, or another part of the plumbing.

Myth: “Low hot water pressure means I need a new water heater.”

Truth: The water heater is only one possible source of the problem.

If the cold water flows normally but the hot water is weak, there may be a restriction in:

• A faucet or shower cartridge
• A shutoff valve
• A flexible connector
• The hot water piping
• A mixing valve
• A tankless inlet screen
• A recirculation system component

Replacing the water heater won’t correct a restriction somewhere else in the plumbing. The first step is determining whether the problem affects one fixture, one area of the house, or every hot water fixture.

If the hot water seems weak at one faucet, check another fixture before blaming the water heater.

When the hot water flow is normal everywhere else, the problem is probably located at that one fixture. Common causes include:

• A clogged faucet aerator
• A partially closed shutoff valve
• A kinked supply line
• Debris inside the faucet cartridge

Testing several fixtures can help determine whether you have one clogged faucet or a restriction affecting the entire hot-water system.

Why is hot water coming from your cold faucet?

A little warm water at first may be harmless, especially when the cold-water pipe runs through a hot attic, garage, exterior wall, or mechanical space.

But if the cold water stays warm or becomes hotter the longer it runs, you may have a plumbing crossover.

Hot water can enter the cold-water system through:

• A damaged faucet or shower cartridge
• A failed or missing check valve
• An appliance mixing valve
• Incorrectly connected plumbing
• A hot-water recirculation crossover valve

Certain retrofit recirculation systems intentionally use the cold-water pipe as a temporary return path. Some initial warmth may be expected with that type of system, but continuously hot water on the cold side should be investigated.
