Happy first day of Spring! As the weather warms up and everyone starts enjoying outdoor activities once again, keep the following safety tips in mind:
- Know what's below! If you are unsure of where utility lines are located, call 811 before you dig to have those locations marked.
- Fly kites, drones, and model planes only in open areas away from power lines.
- Only use heavy-duty, grounded, three-pronged extension cords labeled for outdoor use.
- Need to prune or remove a tree near your house or power lines? Call your power provider to have them assess your circumstances.
- Look up and check for overhead power lines before moving ladders, extension pruners or other longer tools.
- Teach children to stay away from trees near power lines and utility equipment, including pad-mounted electrical equipment, underground vaults, utility poles, and substations.
- Outdoor outlets should have ground fault circuit interrupters to guard against electrocution, as well as outlet covers to block water.
- Water and electricity don't mix! Keep electrical equipment and extension cords away from pools, ponds and standing water.
To ensure you and your family can avoid electrical accidents when working or playing outdoors, always be mindful of your surroundings and environment!
