Osteria Italian Restaurant in the Virginia Highlands is open for business. Construction of the new covered patio is substantially complete. The owner asked me to come up with something that was inspired by a covered patio in Florence, Italy that he and his wife loved. As much as we liked the trees, they were completely root bound, outgrowing their brick planters and were starting to die. Now the permanent roof cover provides protection from the elements and with some heaters, extends the outdoor dining season. Cayenne Barnes is the contractor. She is one of several female contractors that I work with on a regular basis.

Will Scruggs with his band Trio Jacomo on stage at the new Churchill Grounds in Decatur. He is the founder of the Mary Lou Williams Jazz Center which includes Churchill Grounds Jazz Club, Clave Cuban Restaurant, Scruggs Woodwinds (lessons, retail, repair), and Recording facilities coming soon. Will dedicated three years of his life to make this dream come true. It was a true David vs Goliath story. He assembled a great team made up of mostly musicians who helped him with everything from design to management to construction and every expert in between needed to pull off something as ambitious as this. He assembled a team and created a family of friends. The soft opening shows are now open to the public. The grand opening will begin in November with some heavy hitters. I’ve been asked several times to try and fit Pickleball courts on residential properties in the Atlanta area and because of lot sizes and lot coverage limits, I’ve never been able to get it to work. Along comes Amy, a huge enthusiast, and she asked me to design a Pickleball court inside her new house. I pushed every zoning rule to the max and managed to get it to work while not making it obvious from the front that a 30’x60’ space with 18’ ceilings is behind that facade.

This is the first sound check of the new Churchill Grounds Jazz Club after the sound system had first been installed and initially tuned for the space. Tony Terrabone is the audio expert that not only installed the PA system, but he also helped with acoustic treatments to the physical space. The entire ceiling over the stage is fabric over a bunch of sound insulation making it one large absorption panel. The shape, size, and proportions of the space as I designed it provided lots of angled surfaces to diffuse the sound and reduced the length of the sound waves from source to listener. Our audio expert found that with some well placed absorption panels, the PA was barely needed. Most of the sound you hear is the natural acoustic tones of the instruments. Each of the speakers are slightly delayed by milliseconds so depending how far they are from the musician, they deliver sound at the same time as the natural acoustic tones. This space sounds amazing thanks to Tony!

Mary Lou Williams Jazz Center is now complete. It is the home of the new Churchill Grounds jazz club, Clave Cuban Restaurant, Scruggs Woodwinds music education and retail, and Koolbonga recording studio. Please stay tuned for the Grand Opening. We’re spending the next few weeks stress testing the equipment and staff. Clave is a full service, stand alone restaurant that will also provide food and drink to Churchill Grounds. If you need a job, Clave needs staff at every position.
