Hello! The creator and producer of the upcoming 7-part docu-series, "Dignity in Rest: Historic South-View Cemetery and the African American Experience."
If you know any families with loved ones buried in South-View Cemetery with a unique and interesting story about their impact on the African American history of Atlanta, please tell them about the docu-series.
We will be at South-View Cemetery Saturday, May 11, 2024, 10:30 a.m. - Noon and Sunday, May 12, 2024 Noon-2:30 p.m. to meet family and loved ones of residents of South-View Cemetery to possibly be included in the docu-series. We will have refreshments at the cemetery and producers will be there to talk with those interested in the docu-series. The website is https://dignityinrest.com. I am also fundraising for the production of the docu-series that will be completed in early 2025.

As we continue to honor extraordinary figures during the last few days of Black History Month, today we remember Bob Marley, a man whose voice resonated beyond concert halls, amplifying the call for freedom, unity, and love.

Born on February 6, 1945, in Jamaica, Bob Marley transcended the boundaries of his small island, becoming a global icon. As a singer-songwriter, musician, and guitarist, his soul-stirring reggae music struck a chord with millions. Yet, his impact reached far beyond his musical prowess.

Marley's songs became closely connected with the movement toward Black political independence in America and several African and South American nations. His powerful lyrics and infectious melodies helped spotlight the struggles and hopes of these communities, making him the first global pop star to emerge from a developing nation.

Although he never received a GRAMMY nomination during his lifetime, Marley was posthumously recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, marking his indelible impact on the world of music.

But Bob Marley was more than a musician. He was a visionary who believed in the power of unity, love, and understanding. Through his music, he continues to inspire us to fight for our rights, to stand up against injustice, and to cultivate love and understanding in our hearts.

As we enter the last week of Black History Month, we delve into the remarkable story of Black Wall Street, a symbol of Black economic success and resilience amid adversities.

Located in the Greenwood suburb of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Black Wall Street was one of the most prosperous Black economies in American history. The foundations of this thriving community were laid by O.W. Gurley, a wealthy African-American from Arkansas. In 1906, Gurley moved to Tulsa, purchased over 40 acres of land, and sold it to fellow African-Americans, paving the way for a flourishing neighborhood.

With the 1910s oil boom in northeast Oklahoma, Greenwood transformed into a buzzing area of prosperity. However, this beacon of success became the target of a devastating attack in 1921.

The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 was a two-day massacre of hundreds of Black residents by a White mob. The aftermath was heartbreaking – over 800 people admitted to hospitals, an estimated 10,000 left homeless, and a thriving community of 600 successful businesses laid to waste.

Yet, the indomitable spirit of Greenwood shone through the rubble. Despite political efforts to thwart reconstruction, the community mobilized its resources and, within five years, the Greenwood area was rebuilt.

Black Wall Street is a testament to the resilience and determination inherent within the African-American community. It's a powerful reminder that even in the face of adversity, we have the collective power to rise, rebuild, and regain our rightful place.
