🚨 BEFORE YOU HIRE A CONTRACTOR IN TENNESSEE — VERIFY THEM.

We keep seeing homeowners get burned because someone said they were licensed.

Here’s the thing:

“I’m licensed” is not verification.

You should verify it yourself.

Tennessee has a public license search where you can look up individuals and businesses, check license status, expiration dates, and even see public disciplinary actions.

⚡ ELECTRICIANS

Ask for their Tennessee electrical license information and verify it.

Don't just look for a truck with a logo or someone who tells you they're “licensed.”

🔧 PLUMBERS

Same thing.

Tennessee has specific plumbing licensing classifications, including Limited Licensed Plumbers (LLP) and contractor classifications for larger projects. Verify what they actually hold.

❄️ HVAC / MECHANICAL

HVAC work falls under Tennessee's mechanical contracting classifications. Don't assume someone who can install an HVAC system is automatically licensed to contract for that work. Verify the license and classification.

🏠 GENERAL CONTRACTORS

Ask for the contractor's license number and verify:

The exact business name
License status
Expiration date
Classification
Monetary limit
Qualifying agent

Tennessee contractor licenses are issued to the business/entity, and the qualifying agent is the person associated with the license who meets the applicable qualification requirements.

🚨 HERE'S SOMETHING MANY HOMEOWNERS DON'T KNOW

Tennessee contractor licensing requirements can depend on the type and dollar amount of the work.

For example, Tennessee requires a contractor's license before bidding, contracting, offering, or negotiating a price on projects of $25,000 or more. Certain electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC and roofing subcontractors also have licensing requirements at that threshold.

So don't assume:

“It's just a small job, so licensing doesn't matter.”

And don't assume:

“They have a business license, so they're a licensed contractor.”

Those are two very different things.

🛡️ ALSO ASK FOR A CERTIFICATE OF INSURANCE

Before someone starts work on your home, ask for a current Certificate of Insurance (COI).

You want to know that the contractor carries appropriate insurance coverage.

And if they hesitate, won't provide it, or tell you, “Don't worry about that,” that's a red flag.

We're tired of seeing homeowners pay someone to do electrical work, only to have another contractor called later because the work wasn't done correctly.

Do your homework BEFORE you hand someone your money.

Verify the license.

Verify the insurance.

Verify what they're actually licensed to do.

🚨 STOP HIRING HANDYMEN WHO SAY THEY’RE LICENSED

Here’s a real situation a homeowner recently dealt with.

A handyman presented himself as a licensed electrician, performed electrical work, and charged the homeowner $1,000 in labor.

The homeowner also had to purchase all of the materials.

Then came the problem: the homeowner discovered the person didn’t actually have a legitimate Tennessee electrical license.

And then there’s the work itself… 👀

This is exactly why Sunshine Electric is tired of seeing homeowners get taken advantage of.

We see homeowners pay someone to do electrical work, only to have us called later to diagnose and correct what was done wrong. Now the homeowner has paid twice — once for the original work and again to have it properly corrected.

Folks, PLEASE stop taking someone’s word for it when they say, “I’m licensed.”

Before you let anyone touch the electrical system in your home:

VERIFY THE LICENSE YOURSELF.
Make sure the license is active and actually belongs to the person/business doing the work.
REQUEST A CERTIFICATE OF INSURANCE (COI).
Don’t assume a business card, page, Google reviews, truck lettering, or someone saying “I’m licensed” means they are.
