A successful landscape design business doesn’t happen by accident. It’s designed.
The clients you choose, the services you offer, the boundaries you set, and the way you spend your time all shape the business you’re building.
If your practice looks successful but feels exhausting, the problem may not be your talent. It may be the design of the business itself.
What part of your business needs a thoughtful redesign instead of another quick fix?

Difficult client conversations are part of running a design business.
The scope changes.
The budget gets uncomfortable.
A contractor creates a problem.
A client pushes back.
And suddenly, you’re trying to figure out what to say—and how to say it—without making things worse.
That’s exactly what we’re talking about in my upcoming course, Navigating Difficult Scenarios.
We’ll look at the situations landscape designers actually encounter and how to handle them with more clarity, confidence, and professionalism—while protecting the client relationship and your business.
Because avoiding difficult conversations doesn’t make them easier. Knowing how to navigate them does.
Navigating Difficult Scenarios, August 27th at 3pm ET.

Listen before you solve.
Focus on the problem, not the person.
And when things get complicated, return to the expectations and systems you established from the start.

Your client wants a $150K landscape on a $50K budget. Now what?

This is one of those moments every landscape designer eventually faces.

It can be tempting to avoid the uncomfortable conversation, try to make the numbers work, or hope you can solve the problem later. But when a client's expectations and budget don't align, clarity early in the process can protect both the project and the relationship.

Instead of immediately saying yes or no, start by naming the gap.

“I think there may be a gap between the project you're envisioning and the budget you're considering. Let's talk about what's driving the cost and see where we have some flexibility.”

Difficult client conversations are part of running a landscape design practice. Learning how to lead them with clarity, professionalism, and confidence is a skill.

We'll be working through real-world conversations like this in **Navigating Difficult Scenarios**, live on August 27.

Save this for the next time a client's vision and budget don't quite match, or send it to a fellow landscape designer who has definitely had this conversation.

The projects on your calendar are not an accident. They are shaped by what you choose to share, the language you use, and the story your marketing tells.
When you highlight the thoughtful details, creative collaborations, and design process behind your work, you help potential clients understand not only what you create, but how you work.
Your ideal client should be the filter for every marketing decision. What you post. Which projects you showcase. The stories you tell. Even the platforms where you show up.
Effective marketing is not about trying to reach everyone. It is about creating alignment with the clients who value your process, trust your expertise, and are excited by the kind of work you want to do more often.
What is your marketing currently telling potential clients about your practice?

What makes your work unmistakably yours?
Your design voice is more than an aesthetic. It is the through line that shapes your decisions, strengthens your proposals, guides your marketing, and helps the right clients recognize the value of your work.
When you understand the principles behind your design choices, you are better equipped to lead with confidence. You can explain your recommendations clearly, respond thoughtfully when a client challenges the direction, and avoid diluting your work simply to please everyone.
Defining your voice does not mean limiting your creativity. It means understanding what you return to again and again, from the materials and forms that inspire you to the emotional experience you want your landscapes to create.
That clarity becomes especially important when a project grows complicated.
In my upcoming live webinar, Navigating Difficult Scenarios, we will explore how landscape professionals can approach challenging conversations, changing expectations, and complicated project dynamics with stronger communication and greater confidence.
