Our first familiar face!: Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta)
Bright, golden-yellow petals
Hairy stems and leaves
Dark brown center cone
Blooms in midsummer across fields, roadsides, and gardens
Status: Rooted
Native to much of North America, Black-eyed Susan is a prairie powerhouse! It feeds native bees and butterflies, supports birds with its seeds, and holds down soil in disturbed areas.
You’ll find it in pollinator gardens, meadows, and even roadside seed mixes. While it may be common, it’s far from ordinary.
If you're looking to add some native flowers to your garden this is a great one! Just be aware that its hearty root system will spread, cut it back in the fall if needed!
