Landscape Interactions is proud to launch a new collaboration with Prairie Moon Nursery on a series of Northeast native seed mixes to support bees, butterflies and moths at the greatest risk of extinction in our region.
These custom mixes were created by the Landscape Interactions team to include the most drought-tolerant plant species native to the Northeast and provide critical pollen, nectar and host plant substrates for a long list of threatened pollinator species.
Our meadow mix contains 29 species of wildflowers and herbaceous shrubs and six species of warm season grasses, provides continuous blooms from spring to fall, and is a majority salt-tolerant species.
Plant species featured in this mix include Andropogon gerardii (Big Bluestem), Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly Milkweed), Astragalus canadensis (Canada Milk Vetch), Baptisia tinctoria (Yellow Wild Indigo), Ceanothus americanus (New Jersey Tea), Desmodium canadense (Showy Tick Trefoil), Eragrostis spectabilis (Purple Love Grass), Eutrochium purpureum (Sweet Joe Pye W**d), Hypericum prolificum (Shrubby St. John’s-wort), Lespedeza capitata (Round-headed Bush Clover), Lupinus perennis ssp. perennis (Wild Lupine), Monarda fistulosa (Wild Bergamot), Panicum virgatum (Switchgrass), Pedicularis canadensis (Canadian Wood Betony), Penstemon hirsutus (Northeastern Beardtongue), Sorghastrum nutans (Indian Grass), Spiraea tomentosa (Steeplebush) and Zizia aurea (Golden Alexanders).
Our lawn alternative mix has 11 wildflower and five graminoid species, tolerates regular foot traffic and requires very occasional mowing.
Plant species in this mix include Antennaria neglecta (Prairie Pussytoes), Blephilia ciliata (Downy Wood Mint), Carex brevior (Plains Oval Sedge), Danthonia spicata (Poverty Oat Grass), Juncus tenuis (Path Rush), Prunella vulgaris ssp. lanceolata (Common Self-Heal), Pycnanthemum tenuifolium (Slender Mountain Mint), Symphyotrichum ericoides (Heath Aster) and Tephrosia virginiana (Goat’s Rue).
At-risk species that are supported by these mixes include Bombus fervidus (Golden Northern Bumble Bee), Bombus pensylvanicus (American Bumble Bee), Megachile melanophaea (Black-bellied Leafcutter Bee), Habro
