Last week at the Alpena County Fair, we got to do something that means a lot to us: support local 4-H youth by purchasing a few of their market animals.

Anyone who’s been around 4-H knows these projects take months of early mornings, hard work, patience, and care. Seeing these young people step into the ring with confidence and getting the chance to stand behind them was something we were proud to be a part of.

The smiles in these photos say it better than we ever could. Thank you to the exhibitors, families, leaders, volunteers, and everyone who keeps this Alpena tradition going. We’re grateful to live and work in a community that shows up for its kids.

Hey, everyone. Let's talk a bit about WATER.

Everyone needs it.

Everyone wants it.

Your flowers would really like to have some.

There's not a single organism on Earth that doesn't benefit in some way from good ole' H20.

The same goes for your pavement installed by C&C.

-

Now, let's just take a moment and pretend I didn't compare asphalt to a living organism.

Sometimes, you really gotta treat it that way, though.

We've heard reports that some people have spotted cracks on pavement that we installed!

We looked everywhere, but none was to be found.

But, after careful inspection, we could see where some people were getting confused.

Some pictures featured little bits of dark spots that kind of look like what's left over on a window after a brisk squeegee.

These weren't cracks, it was WATER!

Let me tell you, water is very important for newly installed asphalt. We use it to ensure quality in a few different ways.

-

1. To prevent cracks. (Oddly enough)

- Asphalt must be installed while hot.

If it cools too quickly, it will never compact, and it will crack.

If it stays too hot, it will oxidize and dry out, get weak, and crack.

The key is to use the correct amount of water with the application to ensure that the asphalt cools at the optimal speed.

2. So asphalt doesn't stick to the roller.

- Need I explain this one? Hot asphalt can be like glue. Without water, we would just be tearing the asphalt right off the ground.

3. To inspect our work.

- Water is used to identify low spots, drainage, level, and yes, even cracks.

If we did not use water as a tool, we would not be able to ensure the quality of our product and serve the community in the way we do best.

Next time you see some dark spots on our pictures, look closer, it's definitely water.

We would never post on Facebook or be content with a product that isn't the best it could possibly be.
