Standing water on lawns and garden beds after rain is a drainage problem — not a weather problem. And drainage problems have a permanent solution that most homeowners never know exists.
A French drain is a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe running through it, installed at a slight downward angle so water follows gravity away from the problem area. No pump, no filter, no moving parts.
How to build one over a weekend:
Dig a trench 12 inches deep from the waterlogged area toward a lower exit point. The trench must slope at least half an inch per foot downward. Line with geotextile landscape fabric. Fill with 4 inches of coarse gravel. Lay a 4-inch perforated pipe on top of the gravel. Cover with more gravel, fold the fabric over the top, and cover with topsoil.
Materials cost: 150 to 400 dollars.
Professional installation cost: 1,200 to 3,500 dollars for identical results.
The water that is destroying your lawn and drowning your plant roots has a direction it wants to travel. The French drain simply gives it a clear path. 🌧️
