The Blake family came to Spivey Building Co with a piece of Grays Harbor land and a picture in their head. Here's what happened between that first conversation and move-in day.

They had a certain vision in mind for the layout they wanted, and they just weren’t finding anything on the Grays Harbor market that truly fit. Every home that “could work” came with compromise, renovation projects, or paying top dollar for someone else’s choices.

So instead of settling, they decided to build.

They came into the process with a clear vision, a realistic budget, and a long list of questions. They knew what mattered most to them: functionality, openness, intentional design, and a home that actually fit the way they lived day to day.

The moment everything clicked was when the layout started coming to life. The foyer opening into vaulted living space. The oversized covered back porch. The flow. The custom details. Suddenly it stopped feeling like “just plans” and started feeling like their home.

Of course, custom building comes with challenges. Every build has moments where decisions shift, details get refined, and priorities have to stay aligned with the budget and vision. But that’s also the beauty of building from scratch. Problems get solved with purpose instead of settling for permanent compromises.

Now that they’ve moved in, the finished home reflects everything they hoped for and more. A beautiful open-concept layout with vaulted ceilings, 8-foot doors, a walk-in pantry, a moody powder bath, a custom tile shower, 3 bedrooms, and a dedicated home office. The kind of home they knew they’d never fully find by house hunting.

Building custom isn’t about being extravagant. Sometimes it’s just the smartest way to stop compromising.

You watched the Orange Team at Breezy Bay last week. This week the Yellow Team is deep in a Grays Harbor triplex renovation — windows in, plumbing running, and a kitchen plan that just got a lot better.

📍 Active job site: Jefferson Triplex — full renovation of a Grays Harbor triplex, all three units.

🏗️ What we're doing this week: Windows are going in across all units. GH Plumbing is running new plumbing and water heaters throughout. New kitchen layouts are being drawn up — and the walls are getting patched back up as we close everything in.

👷 The crew on this one: Colton is leading the Yellow Team with Zack, Cassidy, and Kaden on the tools. GH Plumbing handling all the rough-in work.
⚡ What caught us off guard: The original kitchen plan had 24-inch ranges with no venting. That worked in another era — it's not going to cut it in 2026. So we're redesigning the kitchen layouts to do it right. Tenants deserve better than that, and so does the building.

📅 What's coming next: Walls are closing in, kitchens are getting redesigned, and this triplex is starting to look like three real homes. Follow along — this one's moving fast.

There's a stage in every build where the house is almost there.

The caulking is rough. There's a bubble in the wallpaper. The door jam hasn't been touched up. A sliver of drywall is still showing where tile is going to live.

To most, it might look like a problem. To us, it's a Tuesday.
Every detail you see in this carousel is one our team already has on the list. You don't have to spot it. You don't have to stress about it. You don't even have to ask.

Hear about it or not — it's already handled. That's why you hire Spivey Building Co. 💚 💚

Most people think the first step in building a custom home is finding land or picking a floor plan. It's not. Here's what it actually is — and why getting this wrong costs you months.

The #1 question we get at Spivey Building Co: "Where do I even start?"

Most people think it's finding land. Or getting plans. Or talking to a lender.

The real first step? Talk to your general contractor first.

Here's why that order matters:

📋 A GC can tell you if your land is buildable before you buy it
Setbacks, zoning, flood zone, utilities, access — these determine what you can build and what it costs. We catch deal-breakers before they're your problem.

📐 A GC can reality-check your plans before you pay for them
Most plan mistakes are fixable before the architect finalizes them. After? You're paying to redo it. Our in-house designer reviews every plan set and finds 2–3 functional or flow issues that save real money.

💰 A GC gives you a real budget before you fall in love with something you can't build
Standard builds in Grays Harbor and Mason County start around $202/sqft. Mid-range runs $215–$245. High-end is $280+. That's before land, plans, permits, and utility hook-ups — which typically add $15–20/sqft. Know this before you're emotionally attached to a floor plan.

📅 A GC gets you into the schedule
We run 3–5 projects at a time. Spots fill up. A 1% retainer secures yours — and that money applies to your final estimate.

The very first step: reach out to us. DM us or call 360-268-8353. We build in Grays Harbor and Mason County.

Project Spotlight: Jefferson Triplex 🪟

Windows, windows, and more windows.
Colton, Cassidy, Kaden, and Zack have been full steam ahead getting this triplex sealed back up.

Any guesses how many windows it takes to fill a triplex?

With their home wrapping up this week, we asked the Blakes why they chose to build over buy their home and this is what they had to say -

“We had a certain vision in mind for the layout we wanted, and we just weren’t finding anything that suited all our needs! We watched the market for a long time and every house that “could work” would require either upgrades or renovation and we didn’t want to pay full price for something that would require so much work to make our own, so we wanted our own blank canvas to work with! If we were to buy something there’s no way I would have found something with a beautiful foyer that opens up to open living space with vaulted ceilings, the exact covered back porch I’ve dreamed of, beautiful 8 foot doors, walk in pantry, my moody powder bath, or my beautiful custom tile shower that also happens to have 3 bedrooms and a home office 😍 but since we built, I have just that and even more!”

it's about to get a lot cozier at Breezy Bay 🏡

Insulation kicked off last week on the first floor, and the arch framing over the entry door is officially in.

Where we are:
✓ Siding nearly wrapped
✓ HVAC rough-in done
✓ Insulation underway

This week: drywall, exterior paint, and decks. Plus - the shop broke ground, posts and foundation are next.

Custom builds aren't just about the finished product. They're a hundred small decisions like that arched doorway adding up over months. We love getting to share the in-between with you.
