A skyscraper can sway up to 1 meter in the wind.
And engineers don't just allow it β they design for it.
Here's why that doesn't terrify me (and shouldn't terrify you either) π¬οΈ
When most people think of a "strong" building, they imagine something completely rigid. Immovable. Like a rock.
But that's actually the wrong mental model.
Think about a tree in a storm. The ones that survive aren't the stiff ones β they're the ones that bend. The rigid ones snap.
Buildings work the same way.
Engineers design tall structures with something called a "damping system" β essentially a giant shock absorber hidden inside the building. Some skyscrapers have a massive steel ball (called a tuned mass damper) weighing hundreds of tonnes suspended near the top. When the wind pushes the building one way, the ball swings the opposite direction and cancels out the movement.
The Taipei 101 in Taiwan has one that weighs 660 tonnes.
You can actually watch it move from a public viewing area.
So the next time you're in a tall building and you feel a slight sway β don't panic.
That's the building doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Engineering isn't always about being the strongest thing in the room.
