On the 30th. January. 2026, The last son of the legendary South Sudanese singer Nyankol Mathiang, Thiik Magisto Nyankol Mathiang—known as Mango—has passed away at Aweil Civil Hospital. A family member, Sandy Deng, confirmed the tragic news in an emotional Facebook post, expressing deep sorrow and heartbreak.

Sandy wrote, “With tears in my eyes and a broken heart, I am saddened to inform family and friends that we have lost our younger brother Mangisto Thiik Dominic Deng in Aweil, Northern Bahr El Ghazal State at the age of 37.”

Mango, aged 37, was the only surviving hope for his immediate family after the sudden death of his mother, Nyankol Mathiang, in 2012. Nyankol, a celebrated singer, had immortalized her son in several hit songs, including the popular Det yi pou manhdia

“A Costly Decision: How Removing Kiir Mayardit Women Hospital from HSTP Endangers Maternal and Child Health in Lakes State”

By; Dr. Manyang Marial Balang,
MBBS-University of Juba.

The closure of Kiir Mayardit Women Hospital (KMWH), the only teaching and most trusted hospital in Rumbek, has placed Lakes State on the brink of a serious public health crisis. This decision was taken without proper consultation, thorough analysis, or consideration of its far-reaching consequences on an already overstretched health system.
KMWH was a lifeline for the people of Rumbek and surrounding areas. On average, it treated more than 150 patients daily and managed referrals beyond the capacity of other facilities in the town. Most critically, it plays a central role in maternal and child health services, offering skilled care, reliable drug availability, and professional, dedicated doctors. For many residents, KMWH is the only facility they trusted due to its consistent lack of stock-outs and quality of care.
Its abrupt closure will increase the healthcare burden on smaller, ill-equipped facilities, putting pregnant women, newborns, and critically ill patients at greater risk. Delayed care, preventable complications, and avoidable deaths are likely outcomes of this unfortunate decision if the situation persists.
The Health Sector Transformation Plan (HSTP), Ministry of Health, and the Lakes State Government must urgently reassess this decision. Reopening KMWH, or establishing a clear, well-resourced transition plan to maintain its services, is essential. Protecting public health should take precedence over poorly planned administrative decisions.

The writer is an MBBS holder from the University of Juba and currently practicing at KMWH.
