β‘ **SONIKE ENGINEERING & TRADE | 33kV OVERHEAD LINE CONDITION ASSESSMENT**
# # # **Testing an In-Service 33kV Line β From Measurement to Engineering Interpretation**
Today, **SONIKE Engineering & Trade** successfully carried out a **condition assessment** on approximately **4 km of an existing 33kV overhead line** for our client.
The line has been in operation, and the assessment was carried out as part of a planned **maintenance and condition assessment program** for the overhead line and its associated electrical accessories.
# # # π TESTING APPROACH
We started with **Insulation Resistance (IR) testing** to establish the initial insulation condition before proceeding with the High-Potential test.
The next stage was an **AC High-Potential (Hi-Pot) Test**, with the test voltage increased progressively under controlled conditions.
At approximately **3 kV AC**, the test current reached around **90 mA**, after which the test equipment operated its **overcurrent protection**, preventing further increase of the AC test voltage.
Rather than immediately concluding that the line insulation had failed, we stopped and **interpreted the test behavior**.
# # # π‘ ENGINEERING INTERPRETATION
For an existing overhead line of approximately **4 km**, AC testing requires consideration of the line's distributed capacitance and resulting charging current.
The capacitive charging current can be expressed as:
**Ic = 2ΟfCV**
As the AC test voltage increases, the charging current associated with the line capacitance also increases.
However, an overcurrent condition cannot automatically be attributed to capacitance alone. A proper assessment should also consider:
β’ Insulation leakage
β’ Insulator condition and contamination
β’ Line-to-earth conditions
β’ Earthing arrangements
β’ Test connections
β’ Connected equipment and isolation
β’ Test equipment capability and protection settings
β’ Environmental conditions
# # # π οΈ ENGINEERING RESPONSE
Following assessment of the test conditions and in accordance with the applicable testing procedure, we proceeded with a **DC High-Potential Test**.
The DC test was successfully completed at the **specified test voltage**, and the required acceptance criteria were achieved. β
This provided an additional assessment of the insulation integrity of the in-service line under the selected test methodology.
# # # π KEY ENGINEERING LESSON
Testing an existing HV line is not simply about obtaining a **PASS or FAIL** result.
It requires engineers to understand the relationship between:
**Line Length β Capacitance β Charging Current β Leakage Current β Test Voltage β Test Equipment Capability**
Most importantly, an unexpected test response should trigger **investigation and engineering interpretation**, rather than an immediate conclusion.
At **SONIKE Engineering & Trade**, our approach is:
**TEST β MEASURE β INTERPRET β INVESTIGATE β VERIFY**
We believe effective power-system maintenance is built on **sound testing, accurate interpretation and evidence-based engineering decisions.**
