Stollmeyer’s Castle, also called Killarney, was constructed by Charles Fourier Stollmeyer between 1902 and 1904. Balmoral Castle in Scotland inspired this historic building which was designed by Robert Gillies a Scotsman. It was one of the first houses to be built in St Clair. After its construction, Mrs Stollmeyer did not find that its magnificence fitted her simple taste, and her husband gave it to their son, Conrad. It was Conrad's wife who gave it the name 'Killarney', after a place in Ireland she wished to honeymoon.

During World War II, Killarney was occupied by U.S. Forces and they, due to its fortress-like characteristics, referred to it as the 'Castle'. It has since been called Stollmeyer’s Castle. The property was obtained by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago in 1979 and was used to house a portion of the Office of the Prime Minister until 2007.

Stollmeyer’s Castle has been refurbished to the tune of $48 million and reopened some 114 years after its construction. This national heritage site will be used for guided tours and exhibits and serves as a representation of our rich and diverse architectural heritage. ​Dr. Rowley indicated that school children should be allowed to visit and learn about the country's history, arts and culture.
