พรมแดนมักถูกเข้าใจว่าเป็นเส้นแบ่งระหว่างดินแดน ภาษา หรืออัตลักษณ์ แต่ในความเป็นจริง พรมแดนคือพื้นที่ของการเคลื่อนผ่าน การแลกเปลี่ยน และการก่อรูปความสัมพันธ์ใหม่ ๆ ระหว่างผู้คนอยู่เสมอ
นิทรรศการ “พรมแดนแห่งการพบปะ” ชวนสำรวจเมืองแม่สอดในฐานะพื้นที่ที่เรื่องราวหลากหลายสายธารไหลมาบรรจบกัน เมืองแห่งนี้ไม่ได้เป็นเพียงจุดแบ่งเขตระหว่างประเทศ หากยังเป็นพื้นที่ที่ผู้คนจากภูมิหลัง ภาษา และวัฒนธรรมอันหลากหลาย เข้ามาใช้ชีวิต ทำงาน เดินทางผ่าน และสร้างอนาคตร่วมกัน
ตลอดหลายทศวรรษที่ผ่านมา แม่สอดเติบโตขึ้นท่ามกลางการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางเศรษฐกิจ การเมือง และภูมิรัฐศาสตร์ จนก่อให้เกิดภูมิทัศน์ทางสังคมที่ซับซ้อน ซึ่งความมั่นคงและความไม่แน่นอนดำรงอยู่เคียงข้างกัน สำหรับบางคน แม่สอดคือบ้านเกิด สำหรับบางคนคือจุดพักระหว่างการเดินทาง และสำหรับอีกหลายคนคือพื้นที่แห่งความหวังและการเริ่มต้นใหม่ มุมมองที่แตกต่างเหล่านี้สะท้อนให้เห็นว่า เมืองมิได้มีความหมายเพียงหนึ่งเดียว หากถูกสร้างขึ้นจากประสบการณ์ ความทรงจำ และความสัมพันธ์อันหลากหลายของผู้คนที่มีส่วนร่วมกับพื้นที่
นิทรรศการครั้งนี้รวบรวมผลงานจากศิลปินต่างรุ่นและต่างภูมิหลัง ทั้งผู้ที่เกิด เติบโต และมีรากเหง้าอยู่ในพื้นที่ รวมถึงผู้ที่เข้ามาสัมพันธ์กับเมืองผ่านการเดินทาง การทำงาน หรือการสังเกตการณ์จากภายนอก ผลงานแต่ละชิ้นนำเสนอวิธีมองเห็นและทำความเข้าใจแม่สอดในมิติที่แตกต่าง ตั้งแต่เรื่องราวส่วนบุคคลไปจนถึงประเด็นร่วมสมัยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการเคลื่อนย้ายของผู้คน พรมแดน อัตลักษณ์ และการอยู่ร่วมกันในโลกปัจจุบัน
ภายใต้ภาพจำของเมืองชายแดนในฐานะพื้นที่เศรษฐกิจและการค้า นิทรรศการนี้ชวนมองเห็นแม่สอดในอีกมิติหนึ่ง ในฐานะพื้นที่ของความสัมพันธ์ การต่อรอง การปรับตัว และการสร้างความหมายร่วมกันของผู้คนที่มีภูมิหลังแตกต่างกัน เผยให้เห็นแง่มุมที่อาจไม่ปรากฏอยู่ในภาพจำกระแสหลัก แต่ดำรงอยู่ในชีวิตประจำวันของผู้คนที่อาศัยและเคลื่อนไหวอยู่ในพื้นที่แห่งนี้
ท้ายที่สุดแล้ว “พรมแดนแห่งการพบปะ” ไม่ได้เป็นเพียงเรื่องราวของเมืองแห่งหนึ่ง หากเป็นการชวนสำรวจว่าผู้คนที่ดำรงอยู่ร่วมกัน สร้างสัมพันธ์และสร้างความหมายใหม่แก่สถานที่อย่างไร ท่ามกลางโลกที่เต็มไปด้วยการเคลื่อนย้ายและการเชื่อมต่อที่เกิดขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่อง ซึ่งอัตลักษณ์ ความทรงจำ และความเป็นเจ้าของสถานที่ ล้วนถูกนิยามขึ้นใหม่อยู่เสมอ

Borders are often understood as lines that separate territories, languages, or identities. In reality, however, borders are spaces of movement, exchange, and the continual formation of new relationships between people.
“Border of Encounters” invites audiences to explore Mae Sot as a place where multiple streams of stories converge. More than a point of division between nations, this city is a space where people from diverse backgrounds, languages, and cultures come to live, work, pass through, and build futures together.
Over the past several decades, Mae Sot has evolved amidst economic, political, and geopolitical transformations, giving rise to a complex social landscape where stability and uncertainty coexist. For some, Mae Sot is home; for others, it is a temporary stop along a journey; and for many, it represents a place of hope and new beginnings. These differing perspectives reveal that a city does not possess a single meaning. Rather, it is shaped through the experiences, memories, and relationships of the many people who engage with it.
This exhibition brings together works by artists from different generations and backgrounds, including those who were born, raised, and rooted in the area, as well as those whose connections to the city have emerged through travel, work, or observation from beyond its borders. Each work offers a distinct way of seeing and understanding Mae Sot, ranging from personal narratives to contemporary issues surrounding migration, borders, identity, and coexistence in today’s world.
Beyond the familiar image of Mae Sot as a center of trade and economic activity, the exhibition invites viewers to encounter another dimension of the city: a space of relationships, negotiation, adaptation, and the collective creation of meaning among people from diverse backgrounds. It reveals perspectives that may not appear in dominant narratives, yet continue to shape the everyday lives of those who live in, move through, and interact with this place.
Ultimately, Border of Encounters is not merely about a single city. It is an invitation to reflect on how people live together, form relationships, and create new meanings for places amidst a world characterized by constant transition, mobility, and connection. In such a world, identity, memory, and a sense of belonging are never fixed, but are continually being redefined.
