Something that need attention.

Microsoft has warned that Africa risks becoming primarily a consumer of artificial intelligence rather than a creator or beneficiary of it.

Akua Gyekye, Head of Government Affairs for Africa at Microsoft, made the warning in a statement issued on Thursday in Lagos.

She drew on the company’s Global AI Diffusion Report for the first quarter of 2026 to argue that the choices Africa makes now will determine whether it captures the value created by AI or simply absorbs what others build.

Gyekye said data shows generative AI usage among working-age populations stands at 27.5% in the global North compared to just 15.4% in the global South, a gap she says continues to widen.

South Sudan’s young people are rich in talent but continue to face limited opportunities, weak facilities structures, insufficient investment, and a lack of accessible platforms to consistently showcase and develop their abilities.

Yet the opportunity before us is undeniable. South Sudan holds immense untapped potential in sports—potential that can be transformed into measurable excellence at national, regional, and international levels if we act with urgency and purpose.

This transformation demands clear, coordinated action: early talent identification programs in schools and communities; structured athlete development pathways with defined age-group progression; sustained investment in modern training facilities; certification and continuous development of coaches; and the creation of transparent systems that connect athletes to national teams, scholarships, leagues, and global opportunities.

We must set measurable goals—track athlete development annually, expand grassroots participation year by year, and ensure that every promising talent has a documented pathway to progress. Progress must no longer be accidental; it must be intentional, structured, and accountable.

South Sudan has the potential. Now we must turn that potential into consistent, measurable performance.
