🚨 BREAKING NEWS: Verdict Delivered in Sherikat Sexual Assault Case
A High Court in Juba has today delivered its final ruling in the widely discussed Sherikat gang r**e case, bringing an end to months of legal proceedings that captured national attention.
In its judgment, the court sentenced four suspects to 14 years imprisonment each after finding them guilty of participating in the sexual assault. The judge noted that the punishment reflects the gravity of the crime and sends a strong message that sexual violence will not be tolerated.
Two other suspects, who were confirmed by the court to be juveniles at the time of the incident, were sentenced to five years each in a reformatory center, with the focus placed on rehabilitation and behavioral correction.
Meanwhile, one accused person was acquitted after the court ruled that there was insufficient evidence to prove his involvement beyond reasonable doubt, reaffirming the principle of fair trial and justice under the law.
The Sherikat case sparked widespread public outrage across South Sudan when it first came to light in June 2025, prompting strong calls from citizens, activists, and civil society organizations for justice and accountability.
Today’s verdict officially closes one of the country’s most closely followed criminal cases, with many observers describing the ruling as an important step in addressing sexual and gender-based violence and strengthening confidence in the justice system.
Authorities have encouraged communities to continue reporting crimes and supporting victims so that justice can prevail.
