🐟 "Which Koi should I get first?"

It’s one of the most common questions we get asked! With so many breathtaking colors and patterns, picking your perfect pond companion can be tough.

Here is a quick guide to some of the most beloved Koi varieties in the hobby—known as the "Big Three" (Gosanke) plus a few show-stopping favorites:

🔴 Kohaku – The undisputed King of Koi. Simple, elegant, and timeless with a pure white body and rich red patterns.

⚫🔴 Showa – Bold and dramatic! A jet-black base wrapped in vibrant red and white.

⚪🔴⚫ Taisho Sanke – Similar to Kohaku, but sprinkled with crisp black spots for a striking contrast.

🇯🇵 Tancho – Named after the Japanese Red-Crowned Crane, featuring a single, perfect red mark right on its head.

✨ Ogon – Pure metallic luxury! These solid gold or silver beauties shimmer like jewels under the sunlight.

🦋 Butterfly Koi – Flowing, majestic fins that make them look like underwater dragons as they swim!

💡 Pro-Tip for Pond Owners: No matter which variety catches your eye, a healthy pond with proper filtration and high-quality food will make their colors pop even more!

Why Concrete Mixing Ratio & Slab Integrity are Crucial for Your Koi Pond Construction 🏗️💧

When building a dedicated Koi pond, many focus heavily on filtration systems or waterproofing membranes. While those are essential, the real foundation—literally—starts with the concrete slab.

As shown in this clip, properly mixing and pouring the concrete is a step you cannot afford to rush or compromise on. Here is why:
⚖️ The Massive Weight of Water
Water is heavy—1,000 liters equals approximately 1 ton of load. A standard Koi pond can hold tens of thousands of liters, placing immense, continuous hydrostatic pressure on the base slab.

💥 Structural Weakness & Cracking
If the concrete mix is incorrect or poorly mixed:
Structural strength is severely compromised.
Micro-fractures and structural cracks will inevitably form under the heavy load over time.

🛡️ Waterproofing Isn't Magic
A common misconception is that high-grade waterproofing can save a weak structure. It cannot. No matter how expensive or advanced your waterproofing coating is, if the concrete slab underneath flexes, shifts, or cracks, the waterproofing membrane will eventually tear and fail, leading to costly leaks and repairs.

At Water Concepts, we build ponds designed to last a lifetime.

Not All Koi Pond Filtration Systems Are Created Equal (PART 2) 🐟

Why does an undergravel filter look so attractive?
Usually, it’s the lower price and faster installation. But when it comes to a proper koi pond, cheap and fast doesn’t always mean better.

Undergravel filtration relies on water being drawn through the gravel at the bottom of the pond. Over time, fish waste, sludge and organic debris can accumulate beneath the gravel, making it difficult to remove and that’s when the nightmare starts. 😰

This can lead to:

❌ Poor waste removal
❌ Accumulation of organic waste
❌ Difficult & costly maintenance
❌ Less control over mechanical and biological filtration
❌ Poorer water quality and unhealthy koi

A good koi filtration system should remove waste efficiently, provide sufficient biological filtration and make maintenance easy.

When choosing a koi pond, don't just look at the installation price. Think about how the pond will perform 5, 10 or even 20 years down the road. 🐟💧

Not All Koi Pond Filtration Systems Are Created Equal (PART 1) 😉

An overhead filter tank may look like a simple and convenient solution, but there are several potential drawbacks - from dirty water backflow and exposed pumps to limited filtration capacity and maintenance issues.

A properly designed filtration system should do more than just circulate water. It should provide effective mechanical & biological filtration, reliable waste removal, good water quality & long-term durability.

We’ve put together this infographic to highlight some of the common shortcomings of overhead filter tanks & why the right filtration design matters for a healthy, crystal-clear koi pond.

Waterproofing repair project (fibreglass lamination waterproofing)

We recently took on a project to perform complete fibreglass waterproofing for a client's entire pond and filter chambers.
While waterproofing is our main mission here, we also took the opportunity to help the owner hack and modify their existing filtration chambers to drastically improve water flow and clarity!

Professional Tips:

A waterproof pond is useless if the filtration doesn't keep the water pristine. By combining structural waterproofing with filtration engineering, we ensure your koi thrive in crystal-clear water.

📸 Check out our team in action, meticulously prepping the walls and applying the protective fiberglass layers.
