I don’t know much about orchids but have recently started growing them at home. The flowers last much longer than roses (another big love of mine) and are much easier to grow at home. Look at them, aren’t they pretty! 😍

More figs! 😊

Adding some figs to my breakfast. Figs are loaded with dietary fiber, potassium, calcium, magnesium and antioxidants. They are great for your health! And you can grow them at home!

My Iraqi fig plant from Zhong Han is fruiting again.

There are still quite a few unripe figs on the plant, but I have been watching the ripe ones closely because I have competition.

A little yellow bird has been visiting my balcony almost every day to check on the figs. Very smart bird. It only goes for the nicely ripened ones, and it has beaten me to them a few times before.

This round, I decided to wrap the figs that were almost ready.

Finally managed to harvest and taste one myself. Good texture and very sweet. Now I know why the bird keeps coming back.

Never thought my balcony garden would one day land me in Lianhe Zaobao! 😄

Still pinching myself! Thank you to journalist Ying Zhen for reaching out and writing such a lovely feature, and to photographer Guoxiong for the beautiful photos.

It’s been a journey of plenty of trial and error (and many plants that didn’t survive 😂), but every harvest has made it worthwhile.

May has been quite a month on the balcony.

We’ve had everything from scorching hot afternoons to heavy thunderstorms. It is also the kind of weather that spider mites and mealy bugs enjoy, too. 😅

Despite that, the balcony put on quite a show this month. Roses blooming one after another, orchids flowering, blackberry blossoms appearing and tiny flowers on the bittergourd & chilli plants promising future harvests.

Here’s a little look back at the blooms that brightened up my May. 🌸

Two years ago, I was buying golden yellow passionfruit almost every week to add into my salads and kombucha. Then one day, I had this random thought… can I grow this on my balcony?

No trellis. No proper plan. I just threw some seeds into a pot of potting mix and hoped for the best.

They sprouted. Then came more leaves… and even more leaves. Since I had nowhere for the vines to climb, I ended up coiling them around a pole and just letting them grow.

There was a point where I almost gave up on the plant. It was growing but not giving me any fruits. Then one day, the first flower appeared. I hand pollinated it… and a tiny fruit started forming.

Weeks later, it finally dropped on its own and ripened beautifully. I cut it open and the pulp was so juicy, so sweet and so fragrant. Small fruit, but satisfying.

Well, at least I tried… and got one golden little reward out of it. 😅

Started growing kale a few years ago and it became one of my favourite things to grow on the balcony.

Some of these are grown from seeds, and some from side sprouts of my older dinosaur kale.

The best thing about kale is that the plant can keep producing leaves for a long time.

I grow my kale plants in pots, with well draining potting mix, daily watering, and a bit of Bio Plus 8-8-8 after each harvest. Morning sunlight is enough for the plants, after all they are cool climate crops.

My favourite varieties are dinosaur kale, black Tuscan and dwarf green curled. These give me the best yield and are nice for salads.

These Taiwan white bittergourds started from seeds a fellow gardener I got to know via Facebook passed to me… the seeds were from Taiwan 🥹

Grew them on my balcony. I didn’t even put up trellis (too lazy 😅), just let them climb wherever they want… all over the other plants.

I enjoy growing Bittergourd. I don’t love eating them as much but because I grow them, I do consume them. I gave the biggest one to my parents who enjoy eating Bittergourd more than me 😆.

First time having four soft blush pink Carey roses blooming all at once and they last for days, unlike most of my other roses that give me just a fleeting one day show.

They may not be the most fragrant, but they are just so beautiful in their own way.

I’ve been sharing quite a bit about roses lately. Maybe a little obsessed… but this love has been with me since I was a little girl. Never imagined I would one day be growing them at home and watching them bloom like this. 🩷
