Why Your Pump Pressure Gauge Gives Unstable Readings

A pump pressure gauge should normally show a steady reading while the system is operating. If the needle keeps fluctuating, vibrating or jumping, it may indicate a problem within the pump or water-supply system.

Common causes include:

✅ Air trapped inside the pipeline
✅ Pump repeatedly starting and stopping
✅ Faulty or worn pressure gauge
✅ Blocked gauge connection or pressure port
✅ Incorrect pressure-vessel air charge
✅ Partially closed isolation valve
✅ Unstable water level at the suction source
✅ Pump cavitation or restricted suction flow
✅ Faulty pressure switch or control settings
✅ Leakage within the pipework

Unstable pressure may cause poor water supply, noisy pump operation, frequent pump cycling and unnecessary stress on system components.
