Last Autumn we had the pleasure of planting this garden as a viewpoint from the living room window of a retreat/community space. Less than one full growing season and it's almost at full density. A few plants are now moving into their sunbaked summer state (that's ok, so are we). While other more drought adapted plants love the heat, and seem to steal the show. It's only another couple of months and we will observe some plants springing back to life, and a different display of colours and textures.
If you want to save a lot of time and maintenance - for a diverse, well adapted, low maintenance, drought tolerant plantation such as this, and in this particular region (Southern Algarve), we cannot stress it enough. Plant in Autumn!

The heat is here, but think before you clear!
We often remove dry plants too soon, what are we taking away when we do?
Flowers are not only useful when they look perfect, they're equally beneficial when they're left to dry and complete their life cycle by setting seed for the years to come. Many hollow dry stems provide habitat for insects, solitary bees, etc. The dried seed heads are food, and habitat for many birds, which then spread the seeds further.. If thoughtfully managed, small amounts of dry vegetation doesn't have to pose a fire risk.

Beyond seed dispersal and nesting habitat, what else does standing "dying" vegetation contribute to an ecosystem?

Normally, I'd prefer Autumn plantations with this palette of plants, but this late-spring addition from last April has happily proved me wrong! After only one year it has filled the space nicely. It adds another living layer of opportunity for insects and diversity, and habitat to support the thriving orange grove - that we've now diversified to contain over 60 species of edible plants. It doesn't always look perfect, but the garden is full of life, like all gardens should be!
