At basement level, an accessible outdoor courtyard connected to the garden has been introduced to provide natural light and ventilation to the spaces located on this floor, while also strengthening the relationship between the different levels of the house and the surrounding outdoor areas.

The proposed design seeks a discreet and harmonious integration into the landscape, prioritizing the preservation of the existing vegetation and promoting a way of living based on the continuity between architecture and nature—principles that form the conceptual foundation of the project.

The social areas, comprising the living and dining rooms, are oriented towards the west, taking full advantage of the views over the lagoon and the golf course. The relationship between the interior and exterior is reinforced through the seamless connection to the terraces and swimming pool area, sheltered by a pergola that provides shade while naturally extending the living spaces outdoors.

The kitchen is functionally integrated into the social area while maintaining a more discreet and sheltered position in relation to the main living spaces. The bedrooms are independently arranged around the central courtyard, benefiting from privacy, natural daylight, and their own landscaped outlook.

This project concerns the construction of a single-family residence on a plot of approximately 3,000 m², located in Herdade do Pinheirinho, Melides. The house has a footprint of 259 m² and a gross construction area of approximately 450 m², distributed over two floors above ground level and one basement level dedicated to parking and technical areas.
The architectural proposal was developed in response to the site’s natural characteristics, particularly its dense existing vegetation, which was the defining factor in the selection of the plot. Within this context, the design seeks to create a home that fosters a continuous relationship between the interior spaces and the surrounding landscape, integrating nature as a central element of everyday living.

The spatial organization is structured around a landscaped central courtyard, around which the ground-floor program is arranged. This courtyard plays a fundamental role in the architectural composition, serving simultaneously as a circulation space, a source of natural light, and a visual connection between the various areas of the house.

Wood elements were incorporated into the floors and ceiling in the form of slatted panels with acoustic insulation, providing thermal and acoustic comfort while establishing visual harmony with the existing travertine. The inclusion of indoor plants contributes to the humanization of the space and reinforces the company’s identity.

In 2020, he founded LOA_D Lisbon Office for Architecture & Design along with Filipa, where they develop larger scale projects in the areas of housing, residential and building renovation. Francisco was a member of Architect’s Registration Board until 2017 and he has been a member of OA, the Portuguese Institute of Architects, since 2014.

Francisco Pinto Basto
Co-Founder | Architect

Born in Lisbon, Francisco graduated in Architecture from the UAL University of Lisbon.

He started his professional experience in the practice of João de Almeida and Pedro Ferreira Pinto in Lisbon. At the end of 2009, he joined Foster + Partners in London, where he became an Associate Architect. At Foster + Partners he led projects in master planning, residential, mixed use, transport, and infrastructure. Amongst these, he was part of the team for the Panama airport up to the last phaseof construction, and the Slussen Masterplan in Stockholm, Sweden.

Francisco returned to Lisbon in the end of 2017 and founded Pinto Basto Architecture, where he began to develop projects in Portugal in the sectors of renovation, residential, retail and office, with a major focus in housing.
