The iconic 1.9 TDi, Honda’s V-Tec, MPI, HDI – or perhaps something a bit less obvious? 😉

If you could only service cars powered by your four favourite engines, which ones would they be? Let us know which models you’d fill in the blank spaces on the graphic. 🖼️

Every garage mechanic has their own list of cars and engines they work best with. Ones that aren’t overly complicated, ones they’ve come to know inside out through years of experience. Designs that offer easy access to individual components, or simply ones you just like. 💙

And they don’t always have to match online rankings listing the best engines of the last two or three decades. After all, every mechanic has their own preferences, and what some might see as a strange solution, or even an obstacle, could be a feature that makes working on that particular engine more enjoyable than servicing others. 👍

So what’s your top four when it comes to engines you enjoy working on? Let us know! We’re really curious to see who made your list. Maybe you’ll surprise us with something? 😄

A car with a 2.3 VR5 engine, but not bearing the Volkswagen badge? 🤔 Yes, there was such a model. Can you identify it? We look forward to your response in the comments.

The star of today’s feature takes us back to a time when engineers at VAG liked to experiment and surprise us with unconventional engines. It was they who created designs such as the VR6 and the VR5 discussed here. Five cylinders in a V-configuration, yet all mounted on a single cylinder head, make this a truly extraordinary engine, which is now a hot commodity on the aftermarket. 💶

And although this unit is primarily associated with the Golf or the Passat, there was also a model without the VW badge where this engine could be found.

Which car are we talking about? We leave that for you to guess. 😉 We’ll just hint that the second generation of this model, produced until 2005, straddled the line between the compact and mid-size classes. ⚖️ It was a perfectly sensible choice for anyone looking for a reliable, straightforward saloon with a slightly more exotic character than the VW Bora or Skoda Octavia.

So, do you know which car can solve this equation? Post your suggestions. 💬 And do let us know what you think of the VR5 engine. Have you ever had the chance to service a car with this engine at your garage? How would you rate it?

Forrest Gump used to say that life is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you’re gonna get. 🍫
If he worked at a garage, he’d probably compare them to a cabin filter housing. You never know what’s in store there either. 😅

Filters showing standard signs of wear, consistent with the recommended replacement interval? The ones that aren’t exactly in the best condition, but still look like a cabin filter? How about those that you can see have spent many, many years too long inside the car and have things on their surface you dread to touch? 🤢

In what condition do you most often find cabin filters that you remove from a customer's car when carrying out a filter service? Let us know.

Can you tell from the cars that visit your garage whether their owners generally remember to have the cabin filter changed on time and regularly? Or perhaps, unfortunately, in most cases your garage reality resembles a constant battle with completely clogged filters, full of leaves, pine needles, sand or – horror of horrors – dead animals?

Let us know what it’s like for you by selecting the appropriate response.

And don't forget to write what was the biggest "surprise" you found in an old cabin filter during your career so far. 💬

We know very well that such views can be truly surprising. 😄

Which car (or its repair) still gives you nightmares? 😱

Every mechanic has been through this at some point in their career. A repair so complicated, so full of unexpected twists and unfortunate coincidences, that it stays with you forever. Sometimes you spend long days on that one case, searching for the cause of a fault that seems almost impossible to fix. Do you know this feeling? 🫠

Which component failure, in which car, will you remember for the rest of your professional life? Given the number of problems and difficulties you had to face, which repair was the biggest and most stressful car repair challenge for you? 🔝

Share your story with us in the comments. ✒️ We’re very curious to hear about which car and which repair you will never forget.

Or have you managed to take some positives out of such an extremely difficult and stressful case? Such challenges often become the foundation for further development. They boost your confidence and show that, since you managed it back then, no other car-related task can faze you anymore. Besides, a major repair like this is also a valuable lesson in not overlooking the details and paying attention to aspects you might previously have shrugged off.

Every unpredictable event is an opportunity for growing. Keep this in mind the next time you come across a particularly tricky repair 😉

Can you guess? Go ahead and let us know which car you think this filter fits, even if you're not sure if the answer is correct 😉

No need to be discouraged, as this puzzle can be quite a challenge even for the most experienced automotive professionals. 🔧 After all, not only is the AP 034/7 fitted to relatively young vehicles that have only been on the market only for a couple of years, but it only goes into models from one brand. It is, therefore, naturally a rather rare sight in auto repair shops.

We mention the AP 034/7 because it is a perfect example of how the FILTRON brand's affiliation to the MANN+HUMMEL group allows us to draw on our vast experience in the production of original assembly filters and the patents used there. 💪 We used one such patent precisely in the development of the filter mentioned here. Its rather unusual shape allows it to make full use of the space available under the bonnet, taking care of the purity of the air entering the engine. 💨 The AP 034/7 is, by the way, one of many examples of how the technological support of the Mann+Hummel Group allows us to create even better products that you can successfully use in your workshop. 😊

So, where would you install this filter? In a BMW, a Mercedes or maybe a Peugeot? Choose the right option from the options shown in the graphic and write the letter in the comments! 💬

Do you have a soft spot for a car that other mechanics tend to complain about? 🗯️

We all have our own tastes and preferences. And it’s no different in the workshop. Even if a model is constructed in the same way, some will find it fiddly, challenging to service, with design features they just don’t get on with. For others, that same car will be just more enjoyable and satisfying to work on, whether because of its design, the technology behind it, or simply a soft spot for the brand. 💪

And what other mechanics think or what drivers complain about on forums won’t really change that. 😉

So, which car do you particularly enjoy, even though your fellow mechanics, to put it mildly, don’t exactly share your enthusiasm? 😄

Tell us about it in the comments. 💬

“A proper filter should carry some weight.”

Have you ever heard this in the context of a spin-on oil filter? 🤔

In theory, there is some logic behind this view (just as with the idea that the larger the filter, the better it performs). One of the key parameters determining a filter’s effectiveness is its filtration area. ℹ️ The larger it is, the more impurities the filter can trap. By that logic, it could be assumed that a heavier, more robust canister means there’s more filter media inside, packed more densely, and, as a result, the filter would perform better than others. Right?

Not exactly. 😉 Weight isn’t really a key factor when it comes to assessing filter quality. Let’s set aside the fact that there are many variables involved here, including the canister material, the thickness of the metal, or the weight of the threaded base plate and other components that are not strictly part of the filter media. Even if we assume that filters A and B differ only in the weight of the filter element, that alone does not indicate that the heavier one will deliver better performance.

The filtration surface area depends on a range of factors, such as the technology employed and the materials used. The fibres within the filter media can be more tightly compressed and densely packed, which enhances their ability to trap contaminants, even if the filter seems lighter or smaller than others. ⚖️

When it comes to choosing a quality filter, home-grown methods like measuring or weighing just don’t hold up. Because the key to effectiveness lies in what isn’t visible to the naked eye. That’s why the most reliable approach is to choose established brands with years of experience and a strong market presence.

Simple as that, but it makes all the difference. 🙂

So, which cars make you get into positions like these when replacing the cabin filter? 😅 And which one do you find yourself doing more often: the “kneeling warrior” or the “cabin diver”?

From the outside it might look a bit like yoga, but working in a workshop often involves a fair bit of unplanned gymnastics: stretching and contorting your body in ways you’d never have imagined. 🤸‍♂️ When it comes to filters, it’s especially noticeable during cabin filter replacement. Installing one very often means taking on some rather… unconventional positions. 🤨

Your head shoved deep under the glove box or steering wheel, your fingertips just about reaching the filter housing, even though your arm won’t go any further. Or having to dismantle nearly half the car’s interior. That’s unfortunately the everyday reality for mechanics servicing filters. It’s not as simple everywhere as it is in Toyota or older Volkswagen models. 😕

While we don’t have much control over where cabin filters are placed in vehicles, at FILTRON we do our best to support you so that replacing them is as hassle-free as possible, even in the most challenging cases. That’s why our YouTube channel features a wide range of step-by-step video guides showing how to fit cabin filters in many different models. And of course, we haven’t forgotten about the printed instructions included in the filter boxes. 👍

Where do you find such instructions most useful? Which car model do you think has the most difficult cabin filter replacement process? Let us know.

Up for the challenge? Which filter belongs to which car? 🎯 We’re looking forward to your answers. Pair the letter assigned to each filter with the number of the corresponding car model.

If handling filters for a range of cars is part of your daily work in a garage or parts shop, we reckon this puzzle should be quite straightforward for you. 😉

All the filters presented here are among the leading products distributed by FILTRON in this category. ℹ️ Every year, we deliver them in the hundreds or tens of thousands; they’re a common sight on shop shelves and in workshops, and we’re fairly certain you’ve come across them before.

No wonder, as these filters are typically fitted to popular models that have been common on European roads for well over a decade. That said, there’s also one filter here that’s still regularly ordered, even though it’s designed for vehicles that went out of production many, many years ago. Can you guess which one it is? 🧐

So, which fuel filter goes with which car? Give it a go and let us know whether the vehicles listed here are also among the ones you service most often (or sell parts for). And if not, what’s your number one? 🔝

So, which items would you pick as absolutely essential for a spin-on oil filter change? 🤔 And which could you do without?

Let us know what you’ve chosen from the workbench. And remember, you can pick a maximum of four items for this task. 😉

We’re mentioning this because, if you were stubborn enough, all the parts and accessories shown here could technically be used during a filter change. Maybe not directly—one might be better suited for other workshop tasks, while another could come in handy if you happened to find yourself dealing with the oil plug. But still! 😄

And yes, we know there’s something here that acts as the "ultimate weapon" when a filter is exceptionally stubborn... but for the sake of today's fun, let’s assume we’re looking for the tools needed for a standard spin-on oil filter replacement procedure. 😅

So, what’s your pick? Let us know. Or maybe we’ve missed an item that is an absolute must-have for you when you’re changing the oil and filter? We’re looking forward to being surprised! 😉
