Project Code Orange - LUMS Chapter

Project Code Orange - LUMS Chapter The Harvard College Code Orange is concerned with ensuring social justice by addressing health & other disparities for individuals living in South Asia.

The Harvard College Code Orange is concerned with ensuring social justice by addressing health & other disparities for individuals living in South Asia, with a particular emphasis on Pakistan. The group engages Harvard students and the larger community through an interface consisting of :
programming,
fundraising initiatives, and
development strategies. The principle aim of Code Orange is to reach

out to the impoverished children and adults in one of the largest slums within all of South Asia by supporting them through means of:
health seminars,
referral to existing resources, and
donations. We firmly believe that by educating people about best practices in health, we can help them improve their lives. Furthermore, we do not wish to reinvent the wheel, but rather to keep it turning. As such, central to our foundation is collaboration with grassroots efforts and other supportive entities. Due to the current political landscape, Pakistan is often overlooked by relief efforts. Code Orange plays a dual role of producing deliverable but also raising awareness amongst and engagement by young students. We want to inspire young minds to help make a tangible change in the developing world and foster understanding of slums, especially those in this region of Pakistan.

What attracted me towards Code Orange was the world of possibilities associated with the initiative. It’s a program which recruits aspiring engineers, economists, undergraduates, MBAs and MS students at LUMS, to help harness everyones potential in the areas of development, research and field expertise.

Having worked with several societies on issues pertaining to education, health, community service and CSR, I am honored to be given a chance to spend my last year at LUMS with an organization that will allow me to utilize my learnings on a national level; that too with a team of most dedicated individuals.

I have had amazing mentors, the Founders of the LUMS Chapter, who have helped me at each and every step of the way since my appointment. My team and I have utmost respect for the motivation and spirit they have always instilled in the success of this program.

I look forward to working with my team members, and the new ones who will shortly join us. The launch of this program is going to be a tough and exciting one, but I believe that with every milestone covered, each and every one of us will improve in spirit, dedication, personal and academic growth.

We have high expectations set out by our LUMS and Harvard associates, and if you believe in delivering excellence as well, you are welcome to join our cause for social change in Pakistan.

Yours Sincerely,
Adeena Khan

"Harvard College Code Orange has been more than just a social venture for me. Since my first meeting with the Harvard Public Service Network (PSN) Director regarding the possibility of replicating the project in Pakistan, to the actual recruitment sessions and board meetings at LUMS, I found every day associated with the organization thrilling and motivating!
Our teams at Harvard and Cambridge are super cooperative and always keep their expectations high for us, which gives us an international outlook and touch that no other student group at LUMS can enjoy. We have international partners, Harvard and Cambridge Professors for guidance, but they all expect us to do the job on the ground which means we are the ones leading the entire movement.
Code Orange is all about gender justice, equity, and provision of health. I will perhaps never be able to come over the beautiful memories I have made through this initiative! I am very proud to be associated with the only (after The Economics Society at LUMS) academically oriented student group on campus. I look forward to keep working for this cause in every way possible.”

"Code Orange has offered me the unique learning opportunity where I can combine my interests in community service and research into social issues. Being from Karachi, I have seen first-hand the difficulties that are faced by the people living in slums within the inner city. It is very satisfying to know that through this initiative, we are doing whatever little we can to help these people live a better life. It is has been an absolute pleasure working with the small team we have here and I hope you (yes, you!) are a part of it as well in the coming years".

"Harvard College Code Orange has been a stepping stone in my personal growth as an individual who loves to strive towards social causes. The theme and purpose of this organization caters to one of the key issues in Pakistan and South Asia at large- Health Disparity. We have recruited a brilliant team with extraordinary, committed and zealous individuals who work very hard to achieve the goals that we have set. It has been a pleasure working with the new team and I hope we are able to positively affect lives all across Pakistan."

Founded in 2012, Code Orange was the brainchild of a small group of Harvard students that wanted to make a difference in the lives of the people living in the slums of Orangi Town, Karachi. The first among many steps in this long process is – in partnership with other universities including Cambridge and IBA - devising a s*x education curriculum to tackle one of the root causes of poverty and illiteracy.
The work of the HCO was recognized and two members granted fellowships with the Millennium Campus Network.
