Every time you ask ChatGPT a question, a server somewhere uses about half a liter of water just to cool down. Multiply that by billions of queries a day, and you start to understand why this is a crisis.
China's solution? Sink the servers into the ocean.

Off the coast of Hainan Province, China operates the world's first commercial underwater Al data center - and it's not a prototype. It's fully live, handling over 7,000
DeepSeek Al queries per second, with 10 companies already signed up to run Al model training, industrial simulations, and cloud computing through it. The modules sit 35 meters below the surface inside sealed steel capsules, each holding up to 500 servers.

The ocean does all the cooling for free. No air conditioning. No massive evaporative systems spraying freshwater into the air. Just seawater flowing through radiators on the back of each server rack, pulling heat away constantly. The result? Cooling energy consumption drops by up to 90%.
