Too much fertilizer can burn plant roots because fertilizers contain high amounts of dissolved salts. When too much fertilizer is applied, the salt concentration in the soil becomes very high. This creates osmotic stress, where water moves out of the plant roots instead of into them. As a result, the roots lose water, become dehydrated, and their tissues can be damaged or “burned.”
In addition, excessive fertilizer can disrupt the balance of nutrients in the soil. High levels of certain nutrients, especially nitrogen, can damage root cells and reduce the plant’s ability to absorb water and other essential nutrients. This leads to symptoms such as wilting, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and root damage, which ultimately affect overall plant health and productivity
