𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 — 𝐒ã𝐨 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐨, 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐥 🇧🇷

Designed by FGMF Arquitetos, the Valente is a 21-story mixed-use building defined by its irregular projecting volumes and large cantilevered elements.

From a structural perspective, its complex geometry requires carefully coordinated 𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬, 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬, 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 to safely carry loads back to the foundations.

North America just got its first timber shell of this kind.

Engineering News-Record reports that StructureCraft has completed a saddle shaped timber gridshell at Assembly Studios in Doraville, Georgia. It covers about 4,000 square feet with an 82 foot span, wrapped in stainless steel shingles. The project team nicknamed it "the Pringle." It opened in early June as a World Cup viewing venue and stays on as a permanent bandshell.

What makes it work is the curvature. A shell like this carries load through the surface itself rather than through heavy beams bending under weight, which is why slender timber members can cover that kind of span. The grid is laid out so each timber lath can be bent into place without twisting, so straight stock becomes a curved roof on site.

The catch is that the shell only becomes stiff once the full surface is closed. Until then, the temporary condition governs. That is often the hardest part of a structure like this.
